Elder nntl called t tho ministry 1 J traveled aj a rrlionary four yctre principally II worth Walec and labored with marked zeal and success He married Miss Sarah Williams May 29 1S17 migrated t St Louis In January 1E55 and was president of the Welsh Saints who formed I considerable part ate a-te le edrln on the ship He remained in St Louis zlStit one year when he went to Kingston I Ho remained there lut a ihort time when be removed to Canton 111 where ho located In the fall of 15M 1 f e was at this time id tey poor circumstances financially but lie set t work with a will and soon 1m proved hh pecuniary condition lie was a coal miner at which callus call-us he worked After a time he pur chased 1 tract of coal land in the town of Canton which subsequently subsequent-ly became valuable property die also acquired t > Vo other tracts of coal and near Canton In December ST5 Elder B F Cummings Jr who was traveling in Illinois C a missionary met him He had long been separated from Intimate 1F elation with the Saints but his faith I Ihe Gospel I a taught by tlio Prophet Joseph Smith was firm nnd flttnd t f bright and at his request he was rebaptlzed by Elder Cummings January Sib IST6 die Immediately Hook an active part inextendlng the work of Ihe iuCantonandvicinitywhlcli had now commenced t open up in avery a-very gratifying manner Owing t the facilities Brother Williams had for furnishing employment scattered Saints found and converts made by the Elders In that region were invited by him I to come to Canton and in a few months a branch of about fifty members existed ex-isted there of which he was president l lent At the opening of the year 1ST6 he was a wealthy man and a using his means generously t forward for-ward the work of the Gospel But kJlhh business reverses overtook him in rapid succession and before the middle 1 i 1S77 he was dc lo make a settlement with hl credi lore which left him In poverty lThe t ht l i selllement made he lr but a few hundred dollar lef He now Dado preparations t gather t Zion and out of his scanty funds ho generously assisted a score or more members of the Canton brandt t pay their fares to Utah He arrived ar-rived In Ogden August P 1877 and U few days bIer came to this city almost without a dollar But he and his family were happy and cheerful cer ful Ho Logan this business of a retail re-tail coal dealer in a small sony In which he continued for some months when early I u the ear ISiS he was called on a mission to the southern States responded and labored In that field eleven months when ho was honorably releaseil He was an excellent geologist and t an experienced coal mine manager and soon after his return from his mission ho I became manager of the u A u u coal mines at Pleasant all in October ISO The mines were rapidlydeveloped under his control and soon quite a community of miners and their families fam-ilies were gathered there Many of these being Latterday Saints a branch of the natural natur-al leader and gifted with rare abilities abili-ties in some direction To look into his clear blue earnest eyes and doubt his honesty was Impossible He decided the most important mailers Instantly and was generally guided by a correct Intuition In his business plans and enterprises It was nearly always a leading object to provide employment or aid for others and hu has planned for and i helped to feed thousands Ingratitude Ingrati-tude which I 5 often the reward of tho philanthropic worker never swerved him from his purpose t labor for the welfare of other He was a father t bis employ As n parent he was solicitous solicit-ous for and devotedly attached to his children J a a husband hus-band he W lender and affectionate affec-tionate as a business man he was intelligent and thoroughly reliable and as a Latterday Saint he lived and died faithful t the obligations of the Gospel having a firm assurance resurrection assur-ance of his flection t a glorious In I twn h anilwt father ot fourteen children seven of whom survive him lie also had a lao number of grandchildren These with hundreds of Ills wih bundr Ill countrymen coun-trymen living in this region and a host of
