For For the first time In the history of ot f Peru a a. representative group of ot women rOmen has formed a A. permanent organization to further the f feminist femi ml- ml let movement mo In the tho republic Lima has been entertaining Mrs CarrIe arrIe Chapman Catt the well wen known American suffrage leader In n a a. series of ot lectures one of which was l given In the historic University of ot San Marcos the abs he has been een able to reach a a. large part of ot the he intelligent women of or the dif ferent erent s social classes As a n. result of ot f these meetings there has been organized a n. body to be known as as' as the tho he National Council of or Women which thich draws Its membership from the he higher and middle classes of ot society Little definite progress had been made in the womans woman's movement In 1 Peru prior Brior to Mrs Catts Catt's arrival Several clubs existed among Peruvian Peruvian Pe Pe- ruvian women social charitable and otherwise but only one to further urther womans woman's suffrage No general gentral general gen gen- eral organization similar to the National Council of Women however how how- ever had been attempted as at women are aro not organized for tor earn cam purposes in South America No Immediate effort will wUl be made to obtain the vote for Peruvian L women a a. goal which is believed I to be bo many years ears In the future I The newly organized council will wit work first to se secure ure civil rights for tor women such as have been conceded ed In the more progressive o countries coun coun- tries of or the world Leaders of ot th the I movement l in Peru recognize that tha tire two greatest obstacles to success suc sue cess ceas are the natural timidity of the thi average a Latin American woman and the tho marked between the social classes Until social socia lines Unes are less emphasized i wll will be to difficult for tor the women as a Si whole to work in harmony and an 3 pr progress gress in the suffrage movement will be bo less rapid as a a. conse conse- quence |
