Show Fisherman, Smoker Slaked For 50 Of Forest Fires Half the man-caused fires in the national forests of the nation were laid at the door of the fisherman-smoker, fisherman-smoker, W. B. Rise, regional forester for-ester for the intermountain region of the forest service, declared Saturday. Sat-urday. Mr. Rice made the statement as his region joined others of the nation na-tion in the opening of the eighth annual forest fire prevention program pro-gram throughout the nation. "Everyone is interested in the forests of this region," said Mr. Rice, "for what they are and what they can give. But whether you herd sheep or just drive through, you are receiving a benefit from the forest which should not be repaid re-paid by leaving a blackened waste." The national forest fire prevention preven-tion week is sponsored by the Advertising Ad-vertising council, the state foresters forest-ers of 43 states, and the 10 regions of the federal forest service. Special campaign posters and literature prepared by these sponsors spon-sors will aid the campaign by asking ask-ing everyone using the forests to 'douse those sparks." Civic and welfare groups and social organizations in the region are assisting the state foresters and the forest service in publicizing publiciz-ing the campaign and the distribution distri-bution of the posters. The object of the campaign is to bring every forest user in the region a fire prevention message that will get results, said Mr. Rice He pointed out that last year over the Labor day week end, which is a high fire hazard period, a special campaign by newspapers and radio resulted in a fire-free week end though there were more people in the forests of Utah than ever before. |
