Show "BROTHERS KEEPER" GOOD MOTTO "Am I my brother's keeper?" was Cain's answer to the Almighty's Al-mighty's query concerning the whereabouts of Abel. Is that your answer to the Safety Program? It is just as true now as it was four thousand years ago. You ARE your brother's keeper. Each of us is responsible for the safety of ourselves and others as well. Each of us must be eternally eter-nally on the alert for danger. To fail to warn a fellow-worker of J impending danger, either potential poten-tial or actual, is nothing short of : criminal. Show the new man the safe way I to perform a task. In his anxiety I to make a showing he may be i negligent. Being jealous of his I job, desiring above all else to Im-; press others with his ability, he may let his zeal blind him to doing do-ing the job the "Safe Way." The resuTC may be more than a mashed mash-ed finger, painful but not dangerous. danger-ous. It may mean only a broken tool, easily replaceable. Or, the tool so broken may escape the eye of the inspector and the next man using it may suffer injury. The new man may be nervous, timid, disliking to have it known that he isn't sure of himself. Be friendly with him, make him feel at home. By easing his embarass-ment embarass-ment you may give him added confidence, by which he will feel more free to ask questions. His increased confidence should in-! crease his efficiency and lessen' the possibility of accident. j It is axiomatic that after being ' on the job for some time a man j is often unmindful of the thing he is doing wrong. He may have become accustomed to avoiding a hazard rather than remove it. Then the employee of the longer service may have to listen to the new man as Ee points out the evils already existing. Doubtless ' the ! new man may have as much to 1 contribute in the way of safety ' suggestions as he has to learn. He, loo, should learn that he is his brother's keeper. "You are your brother's keep-' er," is no biblical preachment of! empty words. It is vital to each of 11C Tt.io lionUI. 1 1 n . . us. it is health, and hope for bet-1 ter things to come. It is life. I Without that philosophy life is empty and meaningless. Man is a gregarious animal and for that reason he must extend to others a helping hand that his associa-l tions may be pleasant. Refuse to : aid your fellow-worker and you may be ostracized, shunned, and refused admission to their council coun-cil as an alien. One word may mean an accident acci-dent that didn't happen. A little advice may save a life. There was a time when each man refused to pass on any information to his neighbor for fear the neighbor might usurp his place. That kind of workman went out with bulldozing bull-dozing foremen and Paul Bunyan Today there is a spirit of coooper-ation coooper-ation that never before existed and it is nowhere better exemplified exempli-fied than in the practice of "safety" "safe-ty" in industry. |
