Show 5 Max Simkins Tells of c Adventurous Country the Malays, who were brought to Africa as slaves. These people are strictly Mohammedan, and they observe their customs and ceremonies. cere-monies. While in Port Elisabeth, I had the opportunity of attending a Malayan wedding. It was different differ-ent from our wedding ceremonies in that the bride didn't attend the ceremony. Only men go to the mosque, with the bride's father acting as proxy for the bride and coming home to tell his daughter she is married. But the bride certainly had her hours of glory at home. There on her throne she sits, attended by her three bridesmaids and surrounded sur-rounded by her friends who eat 'i i oi (Continued from page nineteen) jj' faith they have, and the strange v part is that there is not a sign of 0( a burn on their feet. Not only do Tl they walk through the fire, but l0 most of their bodies are covered ig with silver fish hooks pinned ,rl through their flesh. Many would have two or three pins as large as hatpins driven through their w tongues. All this time the Indians 1 would shout and carry on like mad people. Many would gather cc some of the cooler coals, which they thought were holy, and mark xt their foreheads with them. The 01 firewalking left an impression on aI me that will remain with me al- p ways. , People closely related and ei much like the East Indians are sweetmeats and sing songs in her honor. Instead of having one bridal dress, she has four, and her bridesmaids have four as well. First, they may appear in gold, sit on the throne for half an hour, bow, and return in pale blue; then another bow and a return in pink; still another bow and a final return re-turn in white. The zoo in the city of Durban is not the only place where animals ani-mals may be seen, for in almost every part of the city one may see monkeys playing in the streets. At one of the schools the monkeys would come down and steal the children's lunches. Some of the children were attacked and hurt by the hungry monkeys. If you would leave your doors or windows win-dows open they would come in and steal food that might be on the table. In the early mornings in some sections of the city monkeys would climb on the tin roofs of houses and hammer them with rocks, which would wake all the people in the house. Finally, the city took steps to calm them down by feeding them every day, just as the bear are fed in Yellowstone Park. Not only are there monkeys, mon-keys, but zebra and hippopotamus are seen quite frequently. South Africa is part of the British empire and Is ruled by a governor general and a parliament and prime minister. The governor general is appointed by the king and is only a figurehead, while members of parliament and the prime minister are elected by the people. When Britain declared war on Germany, it did not automatically auto-matically bring South Africa into the conflict. Instead, the African parliament was free to vote the issue. Two-thirds voted for war, so Africa voluntarily remained loyal with the mother country. The point I wish to emphasize is that the people are free. They have just as much liberty as we do in the United States. They take advantage of their fine climate by participating in all kinds of outdoor out-door sports. Almost everyone plays tennis. Women over fifty have tennis clubs and they play for hours out in the sun with no injurious effects. Swimming, lawn bawling, rugby, soccer, and hiking hik-ing are the more common sports, which almost everyone plays the year 'round. I have mentioned just a few of the many interesting things which make South Africa a truly glorious glor-ious country, where the world traveler really gets a different kind of thrill in sightseeing. But after all, there is one place choice above all others and that is home in America! |
