Show Springville-Spanish Fork Game Tonight On Don Field; Devils Surprise Carbon Springville's battling Red Devil's, who are proving prov-ing that a fighting smaller club can be better than a slower big eleven, will tangle with the versatile Don Fuller and his gridders in a step-.,, ped-u p game tonight at 7:30 on' the Spanish Fork field. The game has been moved up because of the Utah-IiYU game Friday r.t provo. After whipping the bigger Carbon Car-bon eleven ( even though the score road 19-19) last Friday, the high-spirited Red Devils fire anxious an-xious to do battle against the Dons and hope to keep their slate clean after the din of battle is over. In a beautifully played game against Carbon here last Friday night in which Coach George Pehrson's charges outclassed the favored Dinos, only one incident marred the evening's offensive treat. In the third period, after Springville had led the Dinos 19-13, 19-13, Simmons on an end sweep, crossed the goal line for what was called a touchdown by the two officials. of-ficials. However .the third official disallowed the score amid protests from bystanders on the sidelines and Coach Pehrson protested the game because. of the incongruous decision. Springville's touchdowns came from well executed plays, as did Carbon's and the game was a spectators delight. The Devils exhibited ex-hibited a fine running attack, sparked by the fine gains made by Marvin Fullmer who counted for most of Springville's points. James Simmons came in for his share of the Devils gains. Both were assisted assist-ed by Kunze and Smith who played play-ed well. Fine downfield blocking by the Devils contributed much to the team's success. Carbon's great line and their speedy Gonzales kept their hopes aglow throughout the contest. The Devils first score came after af-ter the Devils had moved to the one yard line, fumbled but then minutes later Fullmer took the ball over for the score. Smith's kick put the score at 7-0. Again the Devils came back after af-ter holding the Dinos and moved the ball to the 5 yard line as the quarter ended. Two plays after the second quarter opened Simmons had hit paydirt for a 13-0 lead after af-ter the kick went wide for the extra ex-tra point. Carbon retvirned a nice kick which went to their own 25 and brought the ball up to the 50. They made a 1st down on the Springville 35 and then the Devils intercepted a pass on the 32. On the next play the Carbon . team scooped up a fumble and raced over for their first score. Carbon's side kick was fumbled by Springville Spring-ville on the kickoff and recovered by the Dinos and on the very next play Grocco scored and the extra point was made on a perfect kick which knotted the score 13-13. Fullmer's pass to Smith took the ball to the 28 and then Black went to the 9 on another pass play before be-fore Marvin carried it over for the td. Carbon again scored in the third, Springville's cancelled score came also and then another drive took them to the Carbon 1 ft. line where the Dinos big wall held. Springville led the visitors offensively of-fensively in statistics by completing complet-ing eight out of 11 passes and making 14 first downs. Carbon made 9 first downs and completed three out of eight pass attempts. |
