There is something about a great painting that lifts one above the small mercenary activities of everyday life, and puts us more in tune with the spirit of the infinite. Like good music and inspiring poetry, fine art is a product of the souls of men and women when they are at peace with the world. Great productions in these three fields are possible only when the spark of creative genius is kindled kind-led by the touch of the Divine Creator. Living masterpieces are possible only when the artist is working for the sheer love of his work, and with no thought of personal gain. No man can paint a beautiful picture, pic-ture, compose a living symphony, nor write a soul-stirring poem, if he has within his soul a vestige of hate, envy, or selfishness.
