Show 1,000,000 MEN GET PAY RAISE WASHINGTON, April 2 (U.R) General Hugh S. Johnson's challenge chal-lenge to industry to aid recovery by cutting hours and raising- pay today had. been met in whole or part by employers of almost 1,000,000 men. The wages-hours action provid- ed potential jobs for almost 100,- j 000 men and increased pay about $2,000,000 weekly. Industries aftected by the movement included: Steel, approximately 400,000 workers received 10 per cent pay increase. Automobile, 100,000 workers receive 10 per cent pay increase and 36-hour week. Bituminous coal, 350,000 workers work-ers receive J5 a day and 35-hour week. General Electric Co., 30,000 to 40,000 workers receive 10 per cent increase in wages. General Mills, Fillsbury Flour mills, Russell-Miller Milling Co., National Radiator corporation; Consolidated Paper Co., and a number of smaller corporations announced 10 per cent wage increases, in-creases, some accompanied by a corresponding decrease in hours. |
