REMAINS AT 1,550,000 Amendments Barred When Bill Is Passed Under Rules' Suspension WASHINGTON, April 4 (U.R) The Jones bill providing provid-ing for riyid control of sugar prod action, was passed by - the house today without a record vote. The bill guarantees guar-antees sugar beet growers in the United States for 1934 a production quota of 1,550,-000 1,550,-000 tons. The domestic cane ' production is fixed at 260,-000 260,-000 tons. Importations from Cuba, Hawaii, and Philippines Philip-pines will be limited by Secretary Sec-retary of Agriculture Wallace. Wal-lace. Hawaii's plea for a fixed quota the same as the United Unit-ed States, was ignored. The house leadership, aid-' aid-' ed by members from the western beet growing states, beat back the opposition of the Republicans .to obtain j:wo-thirds majority to pass the bill under suspension of the rules. This procedure barred all amendments. |
