Show On Utah County Farms With County Extension Agent This is an increase of 48 per cent in the number of plantings. Sibe- rian elm is the tree that was most in demand with more than -19,000 planted. Salt Lane county leads all other counties in the state with 19,491 trees being planted in that section this year, reports Mr. Dunn. Box Elder county is second, Utah third, Millard fourth and Cache fifth; and more rnan G,000 trees were planted in each of the above counties. This brings the total number of small trees distributed from the nursery at Logan to more than 204,000 during the past six years, 1930-1935. The trees have been planted on farm land for windbreak wind-break and woodlot purposes, says Mr. Dunn, as a part of the farm forestry project under the direction direc-tion of the Extension Service. The nursery is maintained by the Utah State Agricultural college as a result of cooperation with the federal government under the Clark-McNary law. The school of forestry has the nursery in charge. Requests for trees are still coming in, Mr. Dunn says, but the orders will be returned because of the advance of the spring weather. The trees will be available avail-able next year and plans are be ing made to increase the capacity or the nursery. METHODS GI KX FOIt TKEAT1NG POTATO SEED As the time approaches for planting potatoes, it is well to consider con-sider how best to handle the seed, says J. C. Jogenson, extension agronomist ag-ronomist of the Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural college. All seeds potatoes pota-toes to be planted should first . be treated for the external potato diseases. This is done by soaking the seed j either in a solution consisting of four ounces of corrosive sublim- j . ate to 30 gallons of water, from one to one and one-half hours; or by- using two pints of formalin and 30 gallons of water, kept at a temperature between 121 degrees de-grees F. and 126 degrees F. and soaking the seed in it for three minutes. After the treatment has been completed, the potatoes should be cut and planted. If the seedbed has been thoroughly prepared so that the ground is moderately moist, best results are secured by planting the seed as soon after it is cut as possible. It will then callus over in 48 hours in the soil and begin to grow. If the seed bed is rather dry and rough then best results may be secured by cutting the seed and allowing it to callus over before planting. The cut seed should, however, never be allowed to lie in direct sunlight because it withers and loses vitality; but it should be spread out in a moist, shady place (or two or three days. It always pays, Mr. Hogenson j says, to have the seedbed well prepared and moist before planting. plant-ing. PLAN E.UtLV AND LATE GARDENS Garden time is here again, and j most people are now planning and j planting their gardens to supply I their tables with a variety of j fresh, healthful and inexpensive ; vegetables a little later, says J. C. ; Hogenson, extension agronomist j of the Utah State Agricultural col- ! lege. Wise homemakers plan to reduce their living costs by growing grow-ing vegetables for both summer and winter use. Careful planning of the garden before planting will save time, : trouble and garden space. A well-I well-I planned garden will provide for two gardens in one; that is, a: space for early, quick-growing vegetables which may be replaced later by root crops for storage. It will include provision for successive succes-sive plantings to supply the table during the summer months. The plans should also include provisions for the late garden for storage for winter use, says Mr. Hogenson. About June 15 is an advantageous time to plant for vegetables which will reach their peak of perfection about October 1. They will not have fully matured ma-tured at that time, but will be tender ten-der and crisp, and if properly stored will taste unusually good in winter meals. These crops include carrots, beets, turnips, cabbage and ruta bagas. Wallace has given tentative approval ap-proval to a marketing agreement for red sour cherries for canning and cold packing." according to word just received by William Peterson of the Utah Extension Service. The agreement would provide minimum prices to growers. grow-ers. The industry's average annual production is about 70.tiU0.uui) pounds. Since 1930 prices to producers pro-ducers have declined to ruinously low levels and during the 1034 season growers in many areas received re-ceived less than one cent per pound above their harvesting cost. Under the agreement a control commitl ee composed of lfi members mem-bers would be set up, with provisions pro-visions also for ropi-esentation by ; districts. The agreement provides that prior to June 10 of each year the control committee recommend a minimum price to be paid to producers for the current year's crop of cherries. The recommendation recommen-dation would become effective upon up-on the approval of the Secretary of Agriculture and on a date specified speci-fied by hm. Growers would then be assured of receiving at least the minimum price for all red sour cherries sold for canning or cold packing. IT AH AVIiKAT FARMEKS TO VOIR OX liKlKliKNDUM Shall the government wheat adjustment ad-justment program be extended through 1936 to 1939 with some modifications, is the question that will be asked of all wheat growers in the United States on May 25, according to a recent announcement announce-ment received by Director William Wil-liam Peterson from the Agricultural Agricul-tural Adjustment Administration. : Plans in every wheat growing state are being made to fully inform all wheat growers on the present world wheat situation, to encourage discussion of the problem, prob-lem, and finally to permit each grower to register his own opinion on the subject in a national referendum. ref-erendum. Some of the provisions of the new proposed wheat program are: (1) voluntary contracts calling for adjustment to meet consumption consump-tion needs and export possibilities possibili-ties during the crop years 1936 through 1939; (2) additional emphasis em-phasis or inducements to shift land to grass in drought and dust storm areas; (3) amount of adjustment and rate and condition of benefit payments to be determined deter-mined each year, but no adjustment adjust-ment to involve reduction of more than 25 per cent of individual base acreage, and (4 ) the base period to remain the same as in the present program. The final details of the proposed pro-posed wheat program are not available yet, according to William Wil-liam Peterson, but will be announced an-nounced soon, he states, by county agents and wheat allotment com- mittees who will be called upon to direct the referendum in their respective re-spective counties. Total benefit payments to Utah farmers who signed up in the wheat production control program had reached $1,054,044.55 on February Feb-ruary 28, the last date for which figures are availbale. FOKESTKY TKKE DISTRIBUTION ENDS More than 54,000 small forest trees have been distributed for farm planting in Utah from the forest nursery this year, according rn Paul M. Dunn, forester for the agricultural extension service at Logan. Shipments for the 1935 season terminated Saturday, said Mr. Dunn, because of the advanced advanc-ed growth with the total exceeding exceed-ing the 1)34 tree distribution by 57 per cent. The small hardwood and coniferous coni-ferous trees of 144 species were planted on 306 farms in 26 counties coun-ties of the state, the report shows. |
