Show La Mar Taylor Sets New Mark for Y Cross-Country , i Rreinholt was sixth and Leon Adams, freshman from Monticello, came in seventh. The other runners run-ners who started but dropped out before the finish were Tony Shal-foon, Shal-foon, sophomore, of New Zealand; Starr Brockbank, freshman, of Spanish Fork; Lyle Maughan, freshman of Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, and Waldo Le Sueur, junior of Mesa, Arizona. This is the second time the race lias been run over the stadium course. Tony Bentley, '30, held the record on the downtown course- of 13 'minutes 24 2-5 seconds, Nelstm and Dean, ran neck and neck for most of the way with Taylor and Snyder a pace behind ind three olher finishers bunched ntuse behind for three-fourths of the distance. When the runners entered "the stadium gates Nelson was ahead, Taylor close behind. Taylor reserved hfcs sprint with but 300-yards to go. Nelson finishing easily also. The race was run under the direction di-rection of Prof. C. J. Hart, Intramural Intra-mural director, and Head Coach G. Ott Romney. Prof. Hart acted as starter, with Prof. H. Giant Ivins, Kimball Mcintosh, Walter Hier, and Coach Romney as timers. I The smooth, machinulike finish stride of LaMar Taylor, Brigham Young university sophomore, won another race for him Friday afternoon after-noon when he set a new record for the "Y" spring cross-country race Taylor's time was 13 minutes three and three-fifths seconds, seconds ahead of his own record of 13 m. 25 s. set last fall in the first run over the stadium course of 2 and one-half miles. Taylor's final sui hit in t hp lust a 00 yards beat out Halpb Nelson, senior from Joseph, Utah, who had led the field of 11 runners most of the way. Nelson, who has won the race over the old course starting at Fifth North, ulso came in under the old recotd, making it around in 13 m. 10 1-5 s. liiu Close Third Close behind Nelson was Ernest Dean, American Fork, a freshman, whose time was 13 nt. 11 1-5 s. Dean and Theron Snyder of Pay-son Pay-son a sophomore, are both previous sweater winners. One of tne pluckiest battles of the race was waged by Harden Breinholt, senior from Manti, who seemed sine of winning a sweater until a tVw yard.-; of the finish. Within about 7 yards of the finish, ; Breinholt fell to the track and Dar- roll Young, of islanding, a sophomore, sopho-more, who was i yards behind, i made up the distance and won the sweater while 1-Jreinholt valiantly stumbled his way the remaining few feet to tfia Uipe. his hands forcing forc-ing his legs to and unable to see the finish mark. Uniws Applause His courageous feat brought a big round of applause from the crowd of onlookers in the stadium. The first four have previously won sweaters and were, therefore ineligible in-eligible to receive the award. |
