Show HEARING ON RETAIL CODE UNDER WAY Johnson Puts Final Touch On Coal Code; Auto Code Comes Next WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (U.R) The rapid pace of the national recovery machinery was maintained today with the interests of millions involved in-volved in developments on codes for coal and the retail trade. A code drafted by the government and intended to end the competitive wage and labor troubles of the soft coal industry neared completion. Administrator Hugh S. Johnson expected to finish work on his coal code by tonight. He conferred until un-til nearly last midnight with warring war-ring factions, discussing various provisions of the code separately with John .L. Lewis, president of the United Mine workers and others. 1 Labor Part Unchanged The disputed, labor, provisions of the code was expected to be in the language of the recovery act, without with-out restrictions on collective bargaining, bar-gaining, and leaving the company union issue for later decision, possibly pos-sibly on the basis of complaints to the national labor board. Deputy Administrator D. D. Whiteside prepared for the nation's first public hearing on trade, as distinguished from industry. It was on a code for approximately 1,500,000 retail concerns employing more than 5,000,000 persons. Those affected included 429.121 storekeepers whose investment is less than $500. Most retail concerns, except those dealing in food, for which a code will be considered later, would be governed by the outcome of today's hearing. Scores of witnesses were to appear. A third important code on which conferences continued was one for the automobile manufacturing industry, in-dustry, but there was doubt that it would be completed today, despite Johnson's eagerness for codes for the large employers at the earliest possible moment. |
