Mr. Smith was born April 24, 1851 in Ihe old fort row, the house in which he was born being the lirst built in Springville. He acted as guard during; the Black Hawk and Indian war and look an active part in the early building of this community. Members of the American Legion auxiliary will be entertained at ITie home of Mrs. Zena Whiting at Mapleton, Wednesday evening, May 6. Mrs. Fein Whiting will be assisting as-sisting hostess.' An excellent program pro-gram is arranged for the occasion with Mrs. Lela Nelson, historian, scheduled to talk. All members ary-1. urged to be present. Members of the Ladies Litcrarv club were guests of Mrs: Earl Groesbeck at her- home Saturday , afternoon. Dr. J. W. Bowdish, Utah : county physician, gave an interest- ! ing talk on child welfare work during dur-ing the afternoon. Following the j talk a tasty two course luncheon was served by the hostess. In attendance at-tendance were eleven club member s and Mrs. Nelson Beal, Mrs. J. F. Wingate, Mrs. L. E. Otteson, M;fc. I C. O. Claudin and Mrs. J. W. Bow-I Bow-I dish, guests. Officers of the club for' the coming year were elected at the conclusion of the meeting as fellows: Mrs. Minnie Groesbeck, president, succeeding Mrs. Helen Crandall; Mrs. Earl Groesbeck, vice president succeeding Mrs. Grant Crandall ; Mrs. Lowry Anderson, secretary and treasurer, succeeding Mrs. Manilla Brown; Mrs. Margaret Grooms, chairman of the program committee succeeding Mrs. Minnie Goesbeck. Plans for the annual Mother's day program to be held at the home of Mrj. A. E. Jacobsen Saturday after noon, May 9, were discussed. Mr1, and Mrs. Jack Pin ley rind two children of Puyllup, Washing-tun Washing-tun arrived' in Springvihe this week lor a short visit. Mr-. Finley is en route to Denver on business. Mrs. Ftnley is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Finley. She with the two children were dinner guests Tuesday or Mrs. Lydia Pul-freymun. Miss Hilda Clgg will be hostess to members of the N. I. P. club a( her home Saturday evening. All members are urged to be present at 8 o'clock. Complimentary to her" parents : Mr. and Mrs. Peter Madsen Of Provo, Mrs. Spender Sumsion entertained enter-tained at a nicely arranged dinner at her home Wednesday. Other out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. James Madsen, uncle and aunt of Mr. Sumsion. After- dinner, din-ner, which was served at noon, the party motored' to Thistle. Spanish Foik, and Pr.yson to visit frit rids. Honoring William R. Smith on his eight ieth birthday anniversary a number of friends and relatives were entertained at a delight fu I birthday party at the home of Mr. ard Mrs. Smith Friday evening. An evening of program with reminiscences reminis-cences of pioneer days was enjoyed by all after which a dainty luncheon lunch-eon was served to Mr. and M 1 s. Valo Blackett.
