Show s GRIEF STUNS NOTRE DAME Rotkne's Death Shocks J School; Funeral Services Expected Monday ' y SOUTH BEND, Ind., April 1 (U.R) lei-Residents of South Bend and students stu-dents of Notre Dame university mourned today over what probably was the most distressing tragedy ; i that could have befallen either ' the death of Knute K. Rockne in an airplane crash in Kansas. The love of students and resi-. resi-. dents for Rockne and the shock i. that news of his death brought to jthis community were things that icould not be described. A powerful combination of re-Bpect, re-Bpect, admiration and love which people here bore for "Rock" com-" com-" prised something akin to reverence find a sort of awful stupor gripped the community as arrival of the coach's body for burial was awaited. In Memory of "Rock" Two thousand students and fnculty members gathered in Sacred Heart church this .morning for a low mass in memory of Rockne. A requiem high mass had been planned for the coach but church laws forbid them during Holy week. Examinations which were to have been conducted today wore excused. ex-cused. There will be no school until next Wednesday. It was considered likely funeral services will be held next Monday , at ; Sacred Heart church, where 5 Rockne was baptized a Catholic In 1925 on a day when his football " team of that year won one of Its greatest victories, a 13 to 10 I triumph over Northwestern. |
