Show SMOOT GETS i MORE MONEY FOR PROJECT Senate Appropriates Million Dollars for Salt Lake Basin Project. L"tah county residents interested in the proposed reclamation project pro-ject of Utah-lake are jubilaut over the reports from Washington to the effect that Senator Reed Smoot has succeeded in raising the appropriation appropria-tion to the million dollar marl; besides be-sides the $375,000 made available for the project by the deficiency bill passed by congress last month. Landowners within the reclamation reclama-tion project are especially Interested Inter-ested in Senator Smoot's success in striking from the appropriation blithe bli-the clause stipulating the payment of four per cent interest on deferred payments. The interest provision was inserted by Representative Cramton when the hill passed the house of representatives. The bill, as passed by the senate, merely makes $1,000,000 available for the construction of Echo reservoir, reser-voir, Utah lake control and Weber-Provo Weber-Provo canal, without any conditions attached which means that the work will be built In accordance with the reclamation, law and on the same basis as other government projectB heretofore built. The' conference committee, ot which Senator Smoot and Representative Repre-sentative Crampton both will he members, will now have to thresh out this Question of interest charges, as well as the increase in the appropriation, appro-priation, but Senator Smoot is as determined to keep out the interest provision ns Cramton Is to hold it in and the senator has something of an advantage because both houses have agreed "to an appropriation of at least $900,000 and that much will be saved in nny event. The conferees cannot go below that limitation. limi-tation. ... The senate having voted down the Cramton interest provision, that feature fea-ture is clearly in dispute and if Cramton is forced to recede on that provision, he cannot, for retaliation, strike out the appropriation as he could have done when the bill was first considered in the house.' 11 At that time' Cramton held' the whip hand ; now he must test his strength ' against that of Senator Smoot. The senate voted unanimously, against the interest charge, whereas there was a division of sentiment In the house. Senator Smoot is' confident he can Win but in the end, .though the fight may be protracted, aa Cramton is a stubborn and persistent persist-ent fighter. |
