Since there are varied national claims to land near the South Pole, it probably will be years before the nations involved in-volved get their different claims straightened out. The man in the street, in addition, can see no great reason for caring who owns such a desolate expanse of ice and snow. You never can tell, however. Americans once thought Alaska was a white elephant. Indeed, there was a time when Oregon and Washington were thought valueless. It might be that in the course of time circumstances could arise that would make the Antarctic land extremely worth having. |
