The announcement of the Steel Day general committee was made Tuesday at the Sutton Cafe luncheon lunch-eon of directors of the Provo Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. This committee is to include five Springville representatives represen-tatives and will co-operate with committees of other counties, Carbon, Car-bon, Iron and Salt Lake. Provo's general committeemen as announced by Secretary E. S. Hinckley will be: Frank Doming, representing the Provo chapter of the American Legion Le-gion ; Harry Heal, representative of the Provo Rotary club; John O. Boesley, representing the Provo Kiwanis club ; J. A. Owens, representative repre-sentative of the general public of the city and Scott P. Stewart, representing repre-senting the engineers organization. The general committee was scheduled sched-uled to meet Wednesday afternoon to arrange preliminary organization and to discuss the matter of subcommittee sub-committee appointments. Preston G. Peterson, state road chairman and director Provo Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce, was delegated as the C. of C. representative to confer con-fer with Gov. Charles H. Mabey as to the state's participation in the Steel Day program. Secretary Hinckley read the gov ernor's communication urging that Steel Day be made a state-wide celebration and that the state assume as-sume charge of the event. Mr. Peterson said he hoped everything every-thing would lie done to make the day a memorable one in the history of Utah and suggested the inclusion of Carbon and Iron counties, together to-gether with Utah county, in the leadership of plans looking toward the proper celebration for the birth of the iron industry in the west. "While Utah county is furnishing the water and limestone," II r. Peterson Peter-son pointed out, "Carbon and Iron counties are furnishing the rest of the materials we will use in our iron industry. I think we should invite Carbon and Iron counties to participate partici-pate in the celebration." Arthur N. Taylor pleaded for the right of Utah county to assume and retain the leadership in the planning plan-ning of the important day. "We did not receive encouragement encourage-ment from Salt Lake nor from the governor in our efforts to locate the iron industry in this state until now when it is practically an accomplished ac-complished fact," Mr. Tavlor insisted. insist-ed. "Do you- remember the laborer who came into the vineyard at the eleventh hour?" questioned Mr. Peterson. "Yes, I recall that," replied Mr. Taylor, "but he did come in the vineyard vine-yard to labor and Salt Lake always before has come in only to block or to steal what rightfully belonged to Provo." |
