Show SPRINGVILLE PROTESTS TOLL ; PHONE CHARGE i i City Wants Free Telephone Service to Columbia Steel Corporation Plant. The weekly luncheon of the Springville Kiwanis club was held at the Third ward amusement hall, Thursday evening May 8. The luncheon was served by the members of the Springville Service Star Legion. CraiidaU suggested a pageant, re- 1 presenting the historical and industrial indus-trial growth of Springville as one feature on the program. Comments were made by J. F. Mendenhall, C. K. Jones and R. L. Done, who all i favored the pageant and further , ! suggested the Springville art gallery, gal-lery, as a feature to be used in en- : tertainiag the visitors. A baseball fime wns also suggested as a fea- tare that might he worked into the I program of the day. I. S. Brown reported that there was on exhibition in the window of Brown and Nielson's store, the first , "pi?" that came out of the iron molds at the steel plant. I J. F. Mendenhall gave a report I on the Utah lake project. He stated that the project at present looks very favorable. Senator Smoot, together to-gether with the other Utah repre-! sentatives at Washington are now ; supporting the measure and it is possible that the project may go over within the next twelve months, he stated. ! He j stated that although the steel plant is about one and one half miles nearer to Springville that it is to Provo. yet Provo gets free telephone service to the plant and Springville bas to pay toll charges. Mr. Brown stated that the commute com-mute had done practically every thing possible with the local managers man-agers of the telephone company and had been informed that it is impossible impos-sible to give Springville free service to the plant. The committee was instructed to art in connection- with the officers of the club and take the matter up with the Denver office and show them that Springville and Springville Spring-ville business is being discriminated against. C. R. Jones in behalf of the committee com-mittee appointed to investigate the McXary-Haugen bill which was done at the request of Mr. Winn' of Ne-Phi Ne-Phi a representative of the Utah , State Farm Bureau, asking that a resolution be passed by the club in support of the measure, reported that an investigation had been made and that it was the opinion of the committee that the bill is a political measure and that it is economically unsound that the committee did not recommend the passing of the said resolution. The report was unanimously unani-mously accepted by the club. The male glee club from the Springville high school furnished three numbers on the program and he community singing was led by Elmo Coffman. One of the outstanding features "i the evening was the presentation to the club of a large and beautiful American flag, given by President M. 0. Packord. |
