Show And High Time, Too TVliss Adelia Palacios of the University of Mexico says phe has worked out a new system of teaching, by which a child of six can learn the multiplication tables in five weeks. Such a system is reported "revolutionizing the whole present system of teaching in Mexico." It's going to be tried out on American youngsters this fall. It's about time some method of speeding up the teaching of mathematics was discovered. Children wrinkle brows over figures, strain their eyes aod get headaches for years, learning learn-ing something that they discover, after they get into business, can be performed by a cheap machine. But the teaching, laborious and dull as it is, is defended on the ground that it gives the child "mental exercise." Any short cuts through this maze of figures ought to he welcomed by pupils, parents and pedagogs alike. |
