WIDTSOE ADDRESSES KOLOB STAKE CONFERENCE SESSIONS who recently returned from California Califor-nia was called to make n few remarks; re-marks; Aris Bird of Maplcton sang a solo, nnd the closing talk was made by I)r. Widtsoe. The choir sang "God of Israel," and the benediction bene-diction was given by II. T. Reynolds A. Nellson of the high school. Music for the Snturday afternoon session was furnished by a mixed double qnnrtette from the Spring-vllle Spring-vllle first ward. The invocation , was offered by Orson Hutchinson of the high council. John Tuckett 92 years of age, who was the first bishop of the Springville first ward, and Moroni Miner, DO years of age, a pioneer of 1850 and who was personally per-sonally acquainted with the Prophet Elder John A. Widtsoe of the 'quorum of the twelve apostles, represented rep-resented the general authorities of the church at the qunrtely conference confer-ence of the Kolob stake, held at the Maplcton amusement hal Saturday and Sunday, August 8th nnd 9th. Dr. Widtsoe delivered timely addresses ad-dresses nt each of the four sessions giving valuable advice in regard to temporal matters us well as to spiritual spir-itual affairs. , He said in part: "I have been working for the United States government gov-ernment for the past year and a half on the great Suit Lake Basin reclamation project, nnd the Investigation Investi-gation of the board discloses the fuct that, from Cuche valley on Ithe north, to Sevier valley on the south we have reclaimed scarcely one half of the lands in this state. There Is ns much land in the district that can yet be reclaimed ns there is now under cultivation at the present time. ' And in regard to 'water supply there is enough water in the district if properly stored to cover every acre of land In the district to a depth of six feet Brigham Young and the pioneers knew nothing of these facts he declared. : Joseph Smith, were the first speakers. speak-ers. They gave strong testimonies of the truth of the gospel as restored re-stored to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Edwin M. Snow of the stake presidency presi-dency spoke of the necessity of directed, di-rected, clean and wholesome recreation recrea-tion for the youth of the church. Elder Widtsoe wns then the next speaker and the closing address was made by John Hayes presiding elder of the Thistle brnnch. The quartette sang, "Praise Ye the Lord," and the benediction was offered by Lorren N. Neilson of the high council. The Sunday morning session was openeu oy rne congregation singing "How Firm a Foundation." The invocation in-vocation was by Parley Bills, presiding pre-siding elder of the Soldier Summit branch. The music for the session was furnished by the Springville second ward choir, who sang an anthem, "Awake Ye Saint of God Awake." J. F. Bringhurst of the stake presidency was the first speaker speak-er and was followed by Mrs. Hannah Han-nah B. Mendcnhall, stake president of the Kellef society. John Baley rendered a vocal solo. Mr. and Mrs. Solon Wood who recently returned re-turned from a mission in the Northwestern North-western states related their experiences experi-ences as missionaries among the Indians In-dians at the Fort Peck Indian reservation res-ervation in Montana. Wm. T. Tew Jr., who will teach the seminary work in 'Springville the coming school year gave important reasons why parents should urge their children chil-dren to take the seminary classes. Thy. closing remarks were by Elder John1 A. Widtsoe. The choir snug an anthem, "Praise Ye the Lord," and Bishop Hilton A. Itobertson of the Springville fourth ward gave the benediction. The Sunday afternoon meeting was opened by the congregation siaging "Redeemer of Israel." The invocation was offered by Bishop Ilichard Lovell Mendenhall of the Maplcton ward. The stake choir under un-der the direction of M. E. Crandall sang "An Angel From On High," ent of the teacher training work High." The general and local authorities auth-orities of the church were presented by stake clerk Claude G. Salisbury and unanimously sustained. The only change' in the officers was the release of Mrs. Blanch M. Condie, woh has gone to Boston as superin-work, superin-work, and Wm. T. Tew, Jr., was sustained in the office to fill the vacancy. President George B. Mnyeock was the' first speaker. He emphasized the importance of attending sacrament sacra-ment meetings and of having family prayer in the home. Patriarch O. B. Huntington was then called an and was followed with a vocal solo by Mrs. Heber C. Snell. Miss Fanny Kowiunit, stake presidei of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement association and Mrs. Annu S.. Bird of the stake geneological committee gave reports of their organizations and the work they were doing In the stake. The closing address was by Elder El-der John A. Widtsoe. The choir sang "What Was Witnessed in the Heaven." The benediction was given by George L. Hyde of the stake presidency of the high priests quorum. - In the evening a pageant "The Coming of the Nations," by E. H. Eastmond, was presented at the Springville opera house under the auspices of the stake Sunday school, Idirected by Mrs. M. E. Crandall, Jr. The pageant was much appreciated by the hundreds of people who could gain entrance to the building but hundreds were unable to get inside the building and were forced to re-turne re-turne to their homes. In referring to the problems connected con-nected with the Strawberry project be said, "It is anticipated that the greatest of the problems will be settled set-tled before the end of this year." The reason why people under this project are not able to meet their payments is because they are not engaging enough in intensive cultivation. culti-vation. In order for the farmer to I realize the greatest financial returns he must grow crops that are not perishable. i "As a student recently from the field of investigation, I advise you to grow crops that can be manufac- tured. Grow crops that can be man-1 man-1 ufactured into sugar, and crops that ! an be used by the canniug factories; then you are relieved from the un-! un-! certainty of the markets." Sugar and canned goods can" be kept from year to year and sold when the markets are right nnd there is not the chance to take that there is with perisable crops. "Grow crops that are not perishable and that can be manufactured," he emphasized. em-phasized. He then made a plea to the people to keep out of debt. No community can prosper permanently that goes into debt, he declared. "Easy money "is a curse nnd the man who makes use of ensy money is a fool," he said. Good homes, good clothes, automobiles, automo-biles, modern conveniences and the many luxuries are fine and are for the saints to enjoy, and they should have and enjoy them but they are not entitled to them until they can pay for them. Elder Widtsoe referred to the great controversy that is going on in the world today over the question of evolution. He said this church has always sought for truth from every source. We appreciate the great facts that have ben discovered by science, both in the earth and among the planets of the heavens; we apreciate the great facts that have been discovered by scientific men, in the fossil life, in the various strata of the earth's surface, but he said, there is a great difference between facts, and interpretation that men put on those facts. We accept the great facts that have been discovered by great students of the world but' we reserve the right to put our own interpretation on these facts. At the last session Elder Widtsoe emphasized the three-fold duty of the church. "There are two great duties the church has to the living, he said; first the church labors for its members to keep them in the way that they should go and second sec-ond the church has the great responsibility re-sponsibility of preaching the gospel to those who are not in the church. Every soul regardless of color must hear this gospel. The Savior's work will neve rbe completed on the earth until every person has had a chance to accept or reject this gospel message. mes-sage. "This great responsibility of carrying car-rying this message to all the world rests upon this church he said and the third great duty of the church he continued is t oopen the doors to all that are dead. "No wonder the world is astounded at our declaration, declara-tion, he said, when you consider the magnitude and greatness of this our work to preach the gospel to all the living and open the doors to all that are dead. The conference opened with President Presi-dent George R. Mnyeock presiding. The Maplcton choir sang nn anthem, "His Praises We Will Sing." A. W. Manner of the high council offered the invocation and the choir sang "Just as God Leads." A roll call was made of the various wards of the stake in attendance which showed show-ed Maplcton in the lead with 140 present, and the Springville second ward, second with 72. M. E.
