Show MAJOR WOOD IS FOUND DEAD IN HIS PLANE NEEDLES, Calif., Sept. 4 (r.D The hody of Major John Wood, president of the Northern Airways company and nationally prominent pilot, was found 35 miles north of here today in the ruins of the plane he had hoped to drive to a prize in the national air race. His death was first known to Burrell Smith, pilot for a Los Angeles Ange-les airway company, who landed in the rough desert country near the site where Major Wood's plane was battered down by an explosion while it was enroute from Los Angeles An-geles to Cleveland. , Hood Instantly Killed Smith said Major Wood died instantly in-stantly in the crash and that the body was mangled almost beyond recognition. Desert searching parties par-ties were directed to the spot. The body was expected to be taken to Kingman, Arizona, sometime dur- ing the day. Major Wood, with Ward Miller, I mechanic, left. Loa Angeles at 1530 a. m. Monday. He expected to be in Cleveland not later than 16 hours later. Failure to arrive in the Ohio city led to a general search which finally fi-nally centered north of Needles yes- j terday when Miller, almost ex- I hausted, staggered into the city. i Kseapesiji Parachute ' . .Miller said he left the plane in a parachute after an explosion racked the ship while flying through lightning light-ning and rain. . .Although he made a long search, the mechanic was not able to find either the plane of Major Wood, he said. The wrecked ship first was sighted from the air late yesterday and the body was found underneath it today. |
