Show I Poisoned Alcohol Takes Heavy Toll In New York ' NEW YORK, Oct. 9. (UP) Thirty-two deaths within 48 hours from poisoned alcohol have brought a series of raids on numerous downtown down-town speakeasies and an order from Mayor Walker for immediate arrest of the salesmen of these death potions. po-tions. Only once has the number of poison alcohol deaths mounted higher during an entire year, and that was in 1920 when 38 persons died from a flood of holiday alcohol. Other squads will continue their raids through the east side district, where most of the deaths have been reported. Federal authorities wi'.l aid and Prohibition Commissioner James M. Doran has ordered federal fed-eral agents to investigate. Doran was reported to believe that the deaths were from over-indulgence in an inferior grade of moonshine rather than from wood alcohol. Doran said warnings had been given that the real liquor supply sup-ply in New York was being reduced and that cheap whiskey of home manufacture was replacing it. However 11 of the deaths in the past two days were attributed to wood alcohol poisoning, and Dr. Charles Norris. chief medical examiner, ex-aminer, blamed prohibition for the deaths.
