Show I Clarifying Issues Really, this "whispering" stuff being worked into the i selection of a U. S. president is not wholly without compensa-Liong compensa-Liong features, ulthough ridiculous and scandalous. It adds J u bit in the way of comedy. i .Once every four years, some of us become all gloomed 1 up, lest the country go to the devil, through the other fellows' fel-lows' winning in November; and, the other fellows moan , over the country's going to the devil in consequence of our victory- After November, everybody, probably the devil included, in-cluded, is disappointed since nothing much happens, save a bit more of progress by the country, as a whole. A dash of 1 comedy means somewhat of sunshine, when you are in a state of forebodings. The other day, Nominee Smith consumed much of the time of Oklahoma citizens in refuting a story originated by h gossiping woman, somewhere, to the effect that he had publicly appeared before thousands of New Yorkers whose votes he sought, so drunk that he had to be propped up. Now eomes a yarn to the effect that Hoover once took drinks with Clarence Darrow, the noted criminal lawyer. Darrow Hays that he never had the drinks with Hoover. Also,. Mr. llooVer's political assistants felt.it necessary to proclaim to the world thnt Mr. Hoover hasn't been off water or milk ' Bince the 18th amendment set in and Mrs. Hoover doesn't serve drinks at her table, ever. The official denials of this "whispering" stuff having been recorded, the campaigning may now proceed to larger i and inore vital issues. Is it certain that Mr. Hoover aoesn t leave home for the capitol with one sock on wrong side out? Has nobody discovered that Mr. Smith doesn't behind his oars, when he bathes? Do the lady voters wholly approve of the size of the dots in Mrs. Smith's Swiss gown? Does ! Mrs. Hoover always put the salt-shaker within reach, on her j table? I Maybe, if we can have full information on such points I rs these, the country will be saved, again. At any rate, its a jhame that Darrow didn't get those drinks. |
