Show B. Y. U. Band Wins Statewide Contest at Utah State Fair , The Young university band under Ihe direction of Dean Gerrit de Jong, was awarded first prize in the contest held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Utah State fair. This ensemble of semi-professional musicians re;--vcd a cash j.-izc of $250 anil a gold loving cup. The second prize of ,$100 cash and a selected musical instrument went to the 145th Regimental band, directed by Clarence J. Hawkins, musical director. The Ogden Municipal Mu-nicipal baud, under the direction of Fred D. Williams, received the third prize, $50 in ensh and a hand-sanie hand-sanie baton. All of these organizations organiza-tions are in tile semi-professional class. The committee of judges passing upon the merits of the various contestants con-testants included a personnel of veteran and experienced musicians of high standing in- Utah. They were John Held, chairman; Robert Sailer, Sail-er, Provo, and L. W. Ford, violinist and orchestra director of Ogden. In both solo and ensemble work, the judges made their markings without with-out conference or comparisons, nnd it is of special interest to note that in each instance their conclusions were virtually unanimous. Including amateur and semi-professional, ten bands entered the comest this year, the "elimination" work being done in the tryouts Friday Fri-day and Saturday. |
