Show DR. MERRILL -PURCHASES ! FINE PICTURE By PKOF. B. F. L.VKSKN. We have added tc the art treasures treas-ures of l'rovo a wimer landscape by Jul u F. Carlson of Now Turk City. The picture was purchased last year by the Springville high school. This year Springville gave their first prize of $500 to another John F. Carlson picture very similar in design de-sign to the one purchased the year before. This led to negotiations which resulted in the purchase of one of the pictures by Dr. Horace G. Merrill of Provo. It is now on exhibition in the patron's exhibit at the B. Y. art gallery. Works of art, although purchased and controlled by individuals, really belong to 'the nation and the community com-munity where they are housed and so the people of l'rovo are'all interested inter-ested in having a new picture come here as a part of our larger program pro-gram of refinement and uplift. Dr. Merrill is an enthusiastic art fun. He has made a very creditable collection of pictures by Utah artists and has some good things done bj European and American painters One of the best pictures in his coi- lection won first place in the an-' nual exhibition of ,the Pennsylvania Academy of Design. John F. Carlson is a typical American painter of a refined, conservative con-servative character. He is concerned more with what is good than with what is new. The uptra-modern, art cults have made no impression upon him. His best pictures are winter win-ter scenes. Many of his motifs are Catskill landscapes. |
