Show Plant Beets For Prosperity Two mistakes never made a thing right ! The farmers of Utah county should remember this in the present sugar beet situation. They have it in their hands at present to perpetuate the sugar industry in this section or to deal it a blow which it will never survive. WHAT ARE THE FARMERS GOING TO DO ? We do not desire to sit in judgment in the present controversy, but for the sake of argument let us admit it would have been better for all concerned if the same j initial payment per ton had been offered throughout the j intermountain section. However, since the contract be- ' tween the beet growers and the sugar producers call for . payment on a sliding scale depending on the sugar content of the beet and the sale price of sugar, the eventual price per ton of beets will be the same, whether the initial payment pay-ment is high or low. Even though the growers may have the better argument argu-ment in this controversy, they cannot afford to ruin an enterprise that means as much to the intermountain section sec-tion and to Utah county in particular as does sugar manufacturing. manu-facturing. The beet sugar industry is unquestionably still the greatest industry in Utah county. It has done more ta build beautiful homes and to spread prosperity and happiness hap-piness than any other industry. It touches more families-in families-in Utah county and more members of these families than does any other enterprise ever established here. Almost every member of the farming family has an opportunity of earning money from the sugar industry. - , From the time the land is prepared and the seed is planted' until the sugar is manufactured and marketed, the in- 1 dustry affords employment to the children as well as the adults. Besides the two or three million dollars that are annually paid the growers of Utah county for the actual growing of beets, several hundred thousand dollars are paid out by the sugar companies for labor in the campaigns cam-paigns at the four large sugar plants and two auxiliary cutting stations in Utah county. Before the advent of this enterprise, most of our land 1 produced three products only: alfalfa, grain and pota- 1 toes. With the establishment of the sugar industry the 1 farmers of Utah county were given the satisfying opportunity oppor-tunity of raising a crop which was marketed before it was planted. With that industry came greater prosperity to the farmer. It gave him larger barns, better herds, real homes and a chance to enjoy some of. the luxuries of life. It brought more automobiles to the farm than any other product ever raised in this section. The extent to which Utah county is dependent upon the sugar industry has perhaps never been more forcibly , noted than a few years ago when the nematod first played havoc with the beet crop. Every farmer, every merchant and professional man felt the depression that resulted. Everything was almost at a standstill and hardship replaced re-placed the prosperity that had existed during good beet years. The farmers of Utah county owe it to themselves and the welfare of the section to perpetuate the beet sugar industry. This year of all years, controversy or no controversy, the farmers should plant a large acreage of beets. THIS IS A BEET YEAR! Leading farrrjers in every community agree to this fact. They declare conditions have never been better for the largest yield ever recorded in Utah county than at present. The water situation is the best known here for many years, insuring ample water for irrigation. Many experienced ex-perienced growers maintain that the beet lands will be freer from disease this year than previously, since the pests thrive best on land with insufficient water. Market conditions also indicate that an extremely low price will be realized this year from grain and potatoes. Beet growers of Utah county ! Are you going to miss this opportunity to add to your own and the entire county's prosperity just to satisfy a grudge for some imaginable injustice which in the final analysis proves to be nothing but a thin bubble of air? THIS IS THE YEAR TO GROW BEETS ! It will give a greater return than anything else that can be planted this season. Progressive and careful farmers farm-ers in every section of the county realize this. That is the reason many of them have already signed up for large acreages and are preparing for an early planting of beets. They will reap. a large return. They will have money at a time when money is needed. WHY PROCRASTINATE AND LET THIS PROSPERITY PROS-PERITY GO TO THE FEW ONLY WHEN IT CAN BE PASSED AROUND TO EVERYBODY? Forget the little misunderstandings that have arisen, sign up for a large acreage of beets, prepare your ground early and keep the wheels of the four sugar plants and two cutting stations in Utah county humming longer this year than ever before. be-fore. By so doing you will save the greatest industry that was ever established in Utah county.'' You owe it to yourself and your community. You will be well paid for doing it.
