Show POLITICS BEGIN TO SIMMER IN UTAH COUNTY By N. C. HICKS i With dates and places set for both Republican and Democratic county conventions, conven-tions, there is considerable speculation rife as to who's who in the Utah county political politi-cal arena. The county conventions will nominate one four-year term :ounty commissioner, one two-year two-year term commissioner, one sounty attorney, one state senator to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Le-Roy Le-Roy Dixon, and four representatives repre-sentatives to the state legislature. legis-lature. Considerable interest is be-, ing manifested in the selection of candidates for the county commissionership. Smoot Willing If the Democratic county convention conven-tion should be in the mood of retaining re-taining A. O. Smoot, present chairman chair-man of the county commission, as a member of that board representing the central section of the county, it is understood Mr. Smoot will be willing to be drafted once more. He has already been a member of the county commission during two ' terms for a total of six years. I Should he again be elected he will have been in the commission for ten j years since he would be elected for the four-year term. Immediaiely pievious to his uluotion to the county coun-ty commission si yr-ai s ago, he was postmaster of the Provo postotfice for eight years. The Republicans are casting about for a suitable man for the 4-year term commissioner. Among the names mentioned by Republican, party leaders for this place are Willis Wil-lis K. Spafford, manager of Smoot and Spafford Coal company of this city; T. H. Heal, manager of the Provo Consolidated Real Estate company of Provo; L. L. Nelson, assistant as-sistant county treasurer; Walter Adams, former manager of the Utah Valley Gas and Cuke company; J. O. Stone, former representative to the .state legislature, and Bert Thorne of the Utah Title company. Payson seems bent on nominating a candidate on both tickets for county commissioner to represent the south end of the county. However, How-ever, it is intimated in certain quarters quar-ters that Spanish Fork proposes to place Niel Dahle's name before the Republican convention for re-nomination. Payson Men In Race Among those mentioned for the Republican candidacy for county commissioner from Payson are Flint Dixon, sheep and cattle grow-1 er; Charles H. White, former mayor of Payson; David Bigler, associated 1 with the Continental Oil company; W. B. Barnett, salesman; and Isaac' Hansen, former district road supervisor super-visor and prominent farmer. The Democrats of Payson may select a candidate from the following: follow-ing: T. F. Tolhurst, chairman of the Nebo school board, and promin-I ent banker and business man; Hen-I ry Erlandson, architect; James' Wilson and Wells Cloward. j |
