Show STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL ASKS FORBUILDING The construction of a two-story and basement cottage to relieve the present crowded condition of the state Mental Hospital, the purchase of additional fa'i'ni lands, 'and tlie changing of the name' of the institution institu-tion from State Mental Hospital to I'tah State Hospital, are among the outstanding recommendations of Dr.1 Frederick Dunn." superintendent of the hospital, in the biennial report of the state hoard of insanity foj Governor George II. Dern. The board of insanity in its report approved ap-proved the reconunendations made , in the report. The buildings have been painted for tlie first time in twelve years, the report says, and the beaut Ifiea-ion Ifiea-ion of (lie ground's with flowers and shrubbery lias given the institution a wholesome environment. ' Attention is culled by tlie state board's reKrt to the fact that Dr. Dunn has introduced a number of advanced measures, toward' the end of making the lives of the patients more pleasant. Foremost among i these, the rojwrt declares, is'tbo j elimination of all forms of restraint j among them. This is believed to have had a tendency to Immunize the entire institution, and is working work-ing out satisfactorily. Careful attention at-tention has 'been given the feeding of the patients, the quality of food lieing better than' ever" before,' the report says, and the (pinn'tity "sufficient "suffic-ient to meet every requirement. In addition to giving the patients systematic ; recreation and manual training to suit the individual, o variety of diversions in the'form of dancing, moving pictures and other amusements are given, all of which are reported as proving beneficial. During the past year a" perfected system "of records of patients has been installed at the hospital and is proving of great value. ' In addition addi-tion to giving a complete history of the piltlent" prior to bis ' entrance, physical and mental examinations are made and blood tests taken. The results of these, together with the' patient's photograph, are kept on file 'and can be referred to without with-out difficulty at any time. There was a total of 739 patients on the books of 'the institution on November 30, 1021, and a total of llS on fhc books June 30, J!)2ti. '1'h reports shows 447 patients were admitted ad-mitted during the period under consideration. con-sideration. Of that number 237 were males niid 210 females. The daily average under troatriiont during dur-ing the period was 7G9. During the nineteen months 411 patients were discharged or died. Of that number num-ber 37 were declared recovered, 222 improved, 21 unimproved, IS as not insane, 10 were transferred to other iiistitutions and 103 died. Approximately 35,000 bushels of fruit and 25,021 dozen of eggs were produced. Nearly 53,000 quarts of farm and orchard produce were canned can-ned by the kitchen department. All milk and butter Used at the institution insti-tution is produced there, the work being dime . by patients. The patients pa-tients are trained also in cabinet making; upholstering, carpentry, manufacture of brushes, sheet metal and tin work, knitting and Sowing, 'doinestic art and "needle work, shoe repairing and various other occupations. |
