A. Sweet, 22, of S52 first avenue. Salt Lake City, struck an automobile automo-bile occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Petit and their son. The boy was standing stand-ing on the side of the car when the i crash came. j The propeller of the plane tore off the top of the large ear, struck the child on the arm and knocked him to the ground, took a zigzag course along the pior leading into the lake, tearing a section of it out, and nosedived into (he water practically prac-tically demolished. ' . ' 1 The injured child Avas hurried to the Aird hospital where the fractures frac-tures were reduced and he was then taken to the family home. He is reported to have spent a poor night, but attending physicians express the belief that aside from the pain from tho broken bones and the shock, he will recover nicely. Accompanying Mr., Sweet in the plane were" Clinton Shaw, IS, son of . Mr. and Mrs.1 Joseph Shaw, and Herbert Madsen, ' 1G, son of Mr, and Mrs. Charles Madsen, both of Lake View, who were taking their first flight. That tbey, together with Mr. and Mrs. Petit, escaped serious injuries ur death is regarded by witnesses of the accident as miraculous. Details of the accident as given by Mrs. Petit, who sat in the back seat of her car and watched the entire performance, are to the effect that the airplane was situated on the east side of the beach about 100 yards north of the bath houses. "As the plane started two small boys were lying in the sand midway between it nnd the waterfront and in a direct line with the course of the plane," Mis. Tetit said. "As the machine' approached the boys the pilot apparently saw' them and made a sharp turn to the. left. In doing so he made n complete circle missing the suit room of the bathing department only a few feet, and headed directly for our car which was parked at the edge of the water about 'four feet south of the pier leading out into the water. At a point a few yards from our ear the plane left the ground, but it was not high enough to clear the car the propeller striking it with a terrific ter-rific crash." ' - The plane which is owned by Milo Morrill, of Springville road, Provo, was engaged in " commercial .flying at the beach. Sweet, it is said, had been employed to pilot the machine. |
