As a result of Professor Larsen's letter, the Timpanogos hike management man-agement is planning a celebration in Provo the evening of Thursday, July 17, in preparation for the thirteenth thir-teenth annual hike; All out-of-state and local hiking clubs will be. urged to assemble in Timpanogos Town for this .celebration. A parade of hikers in hiking costume and led by a hiking band will form part of the program. Musical numbers, speeches and other appropriate features fea-tures will be built into the entertainment. HIKE TIP FROM ITALIAN ALPS Prof. B. F. Larsen Tells How Alpine Climbers Carry On. Prof. B. F. Larsen of the Brig-, ham Young university, who is studying nrt in Paris and who was, recently injured in a riot of Americans Amer-icans and Frenchmen at the Olympic Olym-pic games football contest between these two countries, has written to E. L.- Roberts of this city offering some valuable suggestions in regard to Utah's Timpanogos hike. Professor Pro-fessor Larsen was in northern Italy some time ago and had the privilege privi-lege of witnessing several hikes into the Italian Alps. - In describing the manner in which the Alpine group mountain climbs are taken Professor Larsen has the following" to say : "In Florence, Flor-ence, Italy, a great group of hikers paraded the streets the night before their community climb. They were led by a scout band which furnished furnish-ed excellent music. These youngsters young-sters wore blue caps with white tassels, white shirts with blue ties, blue trousers, white leggings, and a white lunch bag on the left hip hung from the shoulder with a blue strap. Bows of white and blue ribbons adorned the instruments they were playing. Following these were groups of hikers in mountain costume, all carrying the official Alpenstocks. "At Bologna and Milan also I saw ' large groups of hikers both at the beginning and the finish of their excursions. All of these reminded me of your great work at home. I am homesick for the Timpanogos hike. I wish I could send you a picture of the hikers parade with their beautiful band and also the 'veteran squad,' composed of men and women who have climbed the |
