Brimhall Traces Growth and Development of University The sonii-cenlonnlnl celebration of the founding of tile Brigham Young university began officially today. During Thursday forenon the halls of the university were IhroliK-cd IhroliK-cd with teachers and1 students of former days, renewing fh f.rind-ships f.rind-ships of the past. On entering the visitors registered and received a white and blue "Y" button ' to be worn during the semi-centennial exercises ex-ercises The relics of the past fifty years placed in the facuUy room attracted ed much Interest. The recognition of photographs of youngsters, now gray haired veterans was an especially espec-ially absorbing performance. ' The dresses of the belles of thirty or forty years ago also received marked attention. At 2 p. m. the nlunvni historical session was held in College Hall. Bethoven's Larghetto from Second Sec-ond Symphony was rendered by Brigham Young university chorus. Invocation was offered by Zina Young Card, a diiughter of the founder of the university and a former for-mer member of the faculty. President Emeritus George H. Brlmhnlil delivered the opening ad-drss, ad-drss, sp'eaking of the history of the school. In leginnlng he paid a tril-lite tril-lite to Brigham Young ns a prophet and inspired leader. The deed of trust, setting forth the purposes of the new institution of learning and revealing the , combined practical nature and spirituality of President Young's mind, was read. The call of Dr. Maeser, the beginning of the ' institution with 29 students, the fire and the growth of the institution from year to year were graphically told by President Brimball. An interesting in-teresting feature was the calling of the roll of the "original 20," five of whom were present, as follows : Diantha Worsley, Alice Smoot Xewell, Sarah Eggertseu duff, Joseph B. Keeler and Martha Riggs Beslcy. As each arose, warm applause ap-plause greeted the old student |
