Show PIGEONS USED IN BLACKMAIL New Yorker Guarded by Police Po-lice as New Method Baffles Baf-fles Detection. NEW YORK, April 3. UE) Police Po-lice guarded Dr. Louis Alofsin today to-day as he awaited return of two carrier pigeons used in a $10,000 extortion plot against him. Dr. Alofsin re'eeived the two pigeons pig-eons by express from an anonymous shipper March 10. Fastened to the back of the male pigeon was a si fit bag containing a note which threaten threat-en e'd death to every member of Alofsin's household unless he placed $10,000 in the sack and freed the pigeons. The doctor notified police. The police had an idea. "Why not," they asked, "send the pigeons with a note to the extortioned extor-tioned suggesting you will meet him somewnere with the money?" Alofsin did. He pointed out in the note that he feared to entrust $10,000 to the" care of a pigeon. He placed his letter in the little silken bag and released the birds. Focus Spyglasses The pige'ons fluttered .away. Twenty-five policemen, atop high buildings in the vicinity, focused spyglasses as the birds winged northward, then west. Any hope- they had, of following the birds' flight was domed to disappointment. dis-appointment. The pigeons flew out over the Hudson river toward the New Jersey hills and vanished in the haze. Several days pate1!' Alofsin received re-ceived a letter from the extortionist. extortion-ist. "I won't meet you," it said in effect. ef-fect. "The risk of arrest is too great. So I'll send you back the pigeons and this time you must send the $10,000. You can't afford to miss." Police admit they are baffled. |
