Show MANY BODIES RECOVERED FROM PITTSBURGH PLANT PITTSBURGH, Nov. 15. (UP) Pittsburgh's North Side today, 24 hours after the gas tanks of the Equitable Gas company had blasted death and destruction, prevented a devastated area. Twenty-three bodies have been recovered and property damage was estimated at several million dollars. Rescue workers reported other bodies, numbering perhaps more than Stuggling through the twisted girders which once was a score, were still in the wreckage. the Pittsburgh Clay tot company, police sighted a body pinned under a beam. It was extricated and taken to the morgue. Frank Kusterle, 38, foreman of the Josephine Home company warehouse, ware-house, was the last known victim Kusterle died in a hospital with a fractured skull. Kustrele had sustained a fractured frac-tured skull while doing rescue work. An officiul of the Clay Pot company, com-pany, where the rescue work was being centered, expressed the belief that the known death list might mount rapidly during the day in view of the fact that more than 100 men had been employed in the Clay Pot plant at the time of the explosion. explo-sion. The plant was demolished and the basement was still filled with water today. Rescue workers during the night had reported seeing the bodies of 23 men in the water under the ruins of the plant. Debris of twisted steel beams and timbers hindered .the recovery of the bodies. I Seventeen bodies in the morgue have been identified. The list of missing mounted hourly hour-ly and ranged in estimate from 10 to 40. . An accurate check of the injured was impossible. Hundreds who received re-ceived minor injuries were given treatment at hospitals and . discharged. dis-charged. Others received first aid treatment from private 'doc tore and at improvised first aid stands. . More than 100 remained in hospitals hos-pitals today. A score of these were reported critically injured. ! While there was a chance of finding find-ing a body or two in almost any of the score of wrecked factory buildings, build-ings, rescue work was concentrated on the plant of the Pittsburgh Clay Pot company. ; Stretched above this pit of water was a mountain of twisted steel as high as a three-story building. The plant, adjoining the huge gas tank, suffered the full force of the blast. |
