The Coast Guard is a mili-tary service and is one of five Armed Forces. U.S. Coast Guard sets exams for graduates The 88th annual examination for admission to the U. S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut, will be held Dec. 7, 1963, in over 1000 cities of the United States, its possessions and selected cities abroad. Appointments as Cadet, U. S. Coast Guard, are made sole-ly on the basis of competitive examination and prospective adaptability to military life. There are no Congressional ap-pointments or geopraphical quotas. An applicant must be a high school senior or graduate, who has reached his 17th but not his 22nd birthday by July 1, 1964. Applicants still in high school must graduate and earn 15 units by June 30, 1964. The units must include three in English, two in Algebra and one in Plane Geometry. Appli- - cants must be in excellent physical condition, between 64 and 78 inches in height, with proportionate weight, and have at least 2030 vision in each eye, correctible to 2020. The Academy curriculum includes academic subjects and military training. Courses are conducted in engineering, the humanities and subjects re-lated to the professional duties of a Coast Guard Officer. Ca-dets are also schooled in the fundamentals of atomic science through the use of a nuclear reactor on the Academy grounds. Miner of 839 South Second East, Springville is serving with the Second Bat-tallio- n, Third Marine Regiment of the Third Marine Division, currently undergoing seven weeks training at Camp Fuji, Japan. The training program began with an amphibious landing which included live firing, small arms training and com-pany and battalion level train-ing problems.
