'A Gathering of Eagles' now being shown at the Paramount For the first time, a motion picture audience is taken into the taut, tense world of TJ. S. Officers and their wives who live on top of the volcano known as the Strategic Air Command, the men who never sleep. Striking the screen at the Paramount Theatre with the dramatic impact of a Ti- - tan blast-of- f, "A Gathering of Eagles," Universal's behind-the-scen-revelation of S.A.C., the greatest military striking force in the world today, liter-ally spellbound those who at-tended its opening today. Although its human stars Rock Hudson, Rod Taylor, Mary Peach and Barry Sulli-van sparkle with superlative performances, all must share honors with the awesome might of S.A.C's supersonic bombers, its towering intercon-tinental ballistics missiles, the fantastic electronic world in which SAC officers exist and the always-dominatin- g Red Telephone whose ring may sig-nal the devastating moment all the world fears. Filmed in magnificent color, "A Gathering of Eagles" is basically a drama about people people whose lives court dan-ger 24 hours a day. Fred will launch an En-glish program here in the ele-mentary schools and he finds the teachers like frankness and truth. I will be teaching four classes of English in the Cagayan High School this year, which is in Tuguegarao. My classes will have from 50 to 54 students in each; it will be most challenging and I am beginning to realize some of the problems that confront teachers, particularly those who are poorly trained. Even though the rainy sea-son has started, it's still plen-ty hot. Almost every afternoon Early politicians insignia in the USA were made of brass, silver, lead, wood and bone. Holes were bored in some so they could be suspended from a watch fob. Others displayed a "plank" from the candidate's platform, Celluloid buttons forerun-ners of todays metal and plas-tic disks appeared in 1892., Since then, the low cost and mass distribution of such em-blems over 200 million in the '60 election has popularized the phrase, "Buttonholing the voter." Peace Corps volunteers write from Phillipines thrill to be able to sing some good ol' hymns with the Lat-ter Day Saints again. The next couple of days we did some shopping in Man-ila and visited with Manang Lita in Quezon City. She is an On Wednesday we elementary school principal. On Wednesday night we took the flight "Night Mercury" at 3 a.m. to Cagayan de Ora in Mindanao. It was a delightful flight. From Cagayan de Ora we finally got on a bus with a lady missionary, Free Metho-dist, 49 years old, and mar-ried but traveling alone. She was glad more or less to tra-vel with us. ride from Cagayan de Ora. This all meant that we had spent two days of traveling in Mindonao instead of about one hour's ride before we fin-ally met Anne. We really en-joyed those two days though, the beautiful scenery as well as the experience with Mrs. Bidwell. Anne was very glad to see us. As she said, "We have three roles to play: one is a Peace Corps volunteer in the yes of th Filipinos, another is a Peace Corps volunteer in the eyes of the Americans, and the third is a Morman!" Yes, we play three roles wherever we go or whatever we do and it is a big responsibility which Fred and I are thoroughly enjoying. We returned from Mindanao now around 5 o'clock we have a shower or a heavy rain-storm; sometimes it will last on into the night which I really enjoy. The people say that God is angry when there is a thunder storm but we think He is gracious and we thank Him . for sending the rain. The humidity remains very high and those afternoons it doesn't rain the nights are awfully warm. Fred is now known as a .'mechanico" after having fix-ed the neighbor's generator, a few lanterns, and other odds and ends. The story doesn't end here though, for much to our surprise our neighbors brought over wiring to our house and connected our home on their generator and we now have electricity. Wow! The lady missionary wanted to go to Nassyli, about half way ,to our destination. Oh, the drive was beautiful and it reminded me somewhat of HOME Utah, Washington, Oregon, etc., with pletny of palm trees, grasses, fers and green vegitation. When it got to be 8:00 in the evening the bus driver told us we wouldn't be able to reach "Damilog" that night because of the rain and muddy, slippery roads, so it was decided that we would stay with the missionary lady, Mrs. Bidw'ell, in Nassyli. On and on we traveled until some-one finally said we had passed Nassyli about 2 hours ago. To make a long story short we ended up spending the night in a small Filipino bedroom with two single beds The next morning early Mrs. Bidwell left for Nassyli and we went on to "Damilog" to meet Anne Sonntag, Peade Corps volunteer from Salt Lake City. When we reached "Damilog" much to our dis-may we found that no one knew of an Anne. We finally caught our mistake when talk-ing with one of the town's people who told us we were probably looking for "Dami-lag- " which was back in the direction we had come from about 200 kilometers. In fact it was only about an hour's what a luxury We now have a porch light, a light in the sala, one in the dining room and another in the kitchen. We happen to be the only Peace Corps Volunteers in the valley with electricity and running water. No, we can't have a fan or an electric iron now, because the voltage is not geared for such luxuries. We are happy though for our step up in society. Currently, it is Sunday morning; we have heard the Tabernacle Choir and are en-joying the pitter-patte- r of rain. We hope you are enjoy-ing life as much as we are. We hope our friends and loved ones have enjoyed the little bit of information of our activities here in the Philippines. Wouldn't you like to join the Peace Corps? A couple of high school girls were very surprised that my father is a farmer and when we told them his arms were very brown because he work-ed long and hard out in the sun they replied, "Oh, we though all Americans were rich and stayed in their hous-es all day long. That's why they remain white." Can you believe that not only the children but many adults have these same mis-conceptions ? ! ! Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bonney Peace Corps Solana, Cagayan, Philippines. late Saturday and went by bus to Clark Air Base early Sun-day. We stayed with the Browns again Saturday night and next morning between all the bus, jeepney and taxi rides and not knowing where Glenn Frandsen's house was exactly, we were fortunate enough to make it to the last 30 min-utes of fast meeting. Glenn is branch president and meets with all American people. Fred said the closing prayer and we felt a true "Mormon spirit" among the people. Af-ter convincing some of the Saints that we don't live among head-hunte- rs and our town is perfectly safe, we have hopes of having some of them coming to visit us in Solana. Glenn has a terrific job at Clark Air Force Base and we are hoping they will come to see us. We enjoyed being in "Little America" with the Frandsen family, Glenn, Tve-lyn- n and their five children. Tuesday, June 4, we return-ed to Manila and did some more shopping and sight-seein- g around the city for a couple of days. Well, the rainy season had begun so we thought it best if we took a plane back home to Tuguegarao rather than risk the bother and mess of washed-ou- t muddy roads. It was a most pleasant and en-joyable 18 days and we are afraid it spoiled us a little with all that good food, re-frigerators, other modern con-veniences such as electricity, and free running hot water, and the beautiful scenery the way.
