Mr. and Sirs. J. Frank San-for- d are home from en enjoy-able seven-wee- visit with members of their family and other relatives and friends in Idaho, the Northwest and Cali-fornia. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Sanford and family and Mr. and Mrs. Mi-che- al Hubbard and family at Seattle - and also attended the World's Fair. They also visit-ed relatives in Portland and in San Francisco and Elko, Nev., on the way home. They spent a week enroute to the North-west with relatives and fri-ends in various parts of Ida. Mr. and Mrs. Alma Miner returned recently from a vaca-tion trip to California and the Northwest. They visited her brother Randall Roylance and his family and other relatives at Sacramento, Calif., and then went to Olympia, Wash., to visit a son Kent Miner and SpringvilSe student joins Peace Corps, leaves soon for Africa - . I r - I i The second student from Springville and oneof a very few from the state, Karen Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Johnson, 339 So. 100 West, has joined the Peace Corps and is leaving August 21 for New York, from where she will leave August 23, by plane for Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. Since June 18, Karen has ' been enrolled at the Univer-sity of Pittsburg with about 90 other volunteers going to the same area, in- - an training program. Among classes taken were education, history of Africa and Liberia, American studies, physical ed-ucation and health studies. All will serve as teachers in the foreign land. About thirty will teach in the elementary grades and about 60 in secon-dary. English, math and his-tory will comprise the main subjects Miss Johnson said. Attended BYTT She has attended BYU two years following graduation from the Springville high school and at 20 years, is re-portedly the youngest in the group and the only LDS going to this area. She will be there until June 1964. Serving in this particular phase of the program, volun-teers receive approximately $160 per month plus a clothing allowance. Housing is fur-nished them as well as trans-portation to and from the coun-try. At the conclusion of 2 years of successful teaching, each one is given $1,800 termina-tion pay. Miss Johnson remarked that Karen Johnson who will leave next week to serve two years with the Peace Corps in Liberia, Africa. the monetary reward is insig-nificant in' comparison to the amount of good which can e by the volunteers, in as-sisting people of foreign coun-tries, to improve educational, health and economic facilities. Volunteers have- - been des-cribed as missionaries who are going into the many countries to teach the people better ways of living giving them a better understanding of the people of the United States and thus promoting peace. Eighty-fiv- e per cent of the celery grown in this country is of the green "Pascal" var-ieties. Jet plane trip graduation gift Diana Alleman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Alleman, re-ceived a belated but promised graduation gift this week when she was presented with a round trip by jet to New York. What's more, she got to take her girl friend, Juanita Stewart with her. Juanita is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stewart. The jet trip was promised to her by her Aunt, Marion Tho-mas of Lynbrook, L.I. New York, where she and her friend are now visiting and with her grandmother, Mrs. Austin Tho-mas. They expect to be gone about three weeks. Local artist has work in winning book The photography art work by ftell Francis, Springville junior high school art instruc-tor, played a prominent part in the makeup of the 1961 Wye magazine, which was awarded two top prizes recently in a San Francisco art show of published materials, it was learned this week. The magazine received the award of Best Piece in the Show as well as Best Booklet, from the Arts directors and Artists Club of San Francisco.
