Show April 21, I960 TIIfi spRlNGVILLE (UTAH) HERALD Page Five Sr. High Student of the Week . . . - i ! . -- I 1 , I Editor's Note A series of "Students of the Week" Is be-ing published in the Spring-vill- e Herald, recognizing stu-dents in the senior class of the high school student body. A student-facult- y committee se-lects the student taking into consideration such attributes as citizenship, school service, at-titude and use of capacities. Mike Woodward Mike Woodward, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin R. Wood-ward, is one of Springville High Schools most energetic and hardworking students. His many talents and his sincere desire to do his best have been displayed in several phases of high school activity. First of all Mike is a good student. He ranks high in the scholastic standings of the senior class and believes that the only way to get good grades is to "hit the books." Although he feels his studies are the major part of high school, Mike thinks Mike Woodward that other activities are also important. He was a member of last year's Junior Prom Coiyf? t.tee and yearbook staff. He'. : ""currently the president of the Science Club, business manager of the yearbook, and social chairman of the A Cap-pel- la Choir. Mike has been a member of the choir organiza-tion for three years and sings with a trio of choir students that has performed many times on school and community programs. Mike has ' attended a summer science institute at BYTJ and has exhibited pro-jects in the BYTJ science fair. In his church work Mike has always been very active. He has earned several awards for his attendance and participa-tion in church programs. With all of his school and church activities, Mike still manages to hold down a part-tim- e job. When he has time to pur-sue his hobbies you'll find him trying to line up a chess match (he plays very well say his opponents) or working out a" new arrangement with the trio. After graduation Mike plans to attend BYTJ on a scholar-ship and study some phase of engineering. celler5 to tlie Editor More comments on stop signs The letter published last veek signed by a taxpayer pro-esti-the excessive use of stop signs of Fourth East St., expressed some of the thoughts I have had in mind for the past several months. We fought' a long, hard ten years to get a traffic semaphore put up at Fourth South and Fourth East and some one came along with a screwy idea and now we have a four way stop. If the officials don't want the citizens of Springville to use Fourth East why don't they plow it up? And another thing. Why haven't right turn lanes been provided on both sides of Main St. at Center? I go through that light at least four times every day and half the time I am stopped by a red light it is because someone has cros-sed the pressure plate, made, a right turn and gone on. The light has turned red after this guy has gbn a block or two down the street. Jack Miller, 380 East 7th South. Phillip Haymond came to Springville Tuesday to visit his grandmother, Mrs. Ruel Avrett, who is seriously ill in the Spanish Fork Hospi-tal and the trip from Santa Ana, Calif., to Hill Field took 55 minutes via the jet plane which he pilots. His father, Paul Haymond met him at Hill Field, brought him to Springville and re-turned him to his jet for the trip back to the coast, all within a few hours. Lt. Haymond makes periodic trips to Hill Field on business. |
