Show SAINTS CONFERENCE Record Breaking Attendance at Eightyfirst SemiAnnual Meeting of Mormons In Salt Lake Salt Lako CItThe expectations of tho church authorities of a tremendous tremen-dous attendance at tho eightyfirst semiannual general conference of tho Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints was fully realized Not only was tho attendance a recordbreaker but It was ono of the most satisfactory I conferences of the Saints In many Ways The sessions were held upon three days beginning Thursday October 0 and lasting over Sunday there being no session of the conference on Saturday Sat-urday In order that tho visitors might have an opportunity to visit tho State fair The first session of tho conference confer-ence was held Thursday morning at 10 oclock In tho Tabernacle and tfio afternoon session at 2 oclock while III the evening a convention of tho Genealogical society was hold in tho Assembly hall Members of the faith were present from all par of the world but especially espec-ially from Utah Idaho and a number of the nearby colonies of tho cnurch On Sunday tho authorities of the church were sustained by the members mem-bers of the church present There were no vacancies In the higher of flee of the church but the recent death of Mrs Bathshoba W Smith ono of the best known and most highly respected re-spected women In the church kad caused a vacancy In the presidency of the Relief society Mrs Emellne B Wells was chosen to succeed Mrs Smith Music was a prominent feature of the conference In addition to the great organ antis the famed Tabernacle choir a number of the best soloists of the state were on the musical program pro-gram Although it had been feared President Presi-dent Joseph F Smith would not bo able to be present owing to recent illness he presided at the opening session ses-sion of the conference having risen from a sick bed His speaking was an effort however and several times during his talk of twenty minutes his voice broke and he was almost compelled com-pelled to give way to his weakness After welcoming the Saints and expressing ex-pressing his gratitude for such a large assemblage at the first meeting President Pres-ident Smith talked on honor and truth He said there was never a time within his life when he had done anything dishonest nor had he ever broken faith he said He declared that he had been true to his God to his church and to his fellow men and that there was nothing In his life which would make him quail when he came before the Almighty on the day of reckoning It wan with a voice of challenge that President Smith defended his honor and character against attacks coming he said from men within the church It was not a defense of the church position upon any matter nor in general in regard to the policies of President Smith There have been some attacks against the president by members of the church it is understood un-derstood and these President Smith answered in no uncertain terms in spite of his weak condition The rest of the work of the opening session of the conference consisted of addresses by Anthon H Lund and John Henry Smith counsellors in the first presidency and four of the seven presidents of seventies There are 2000 missionaries in the field said President Lund who are working diligently in the cause He urged attendance of children and membership in the various organizations organiza-tions for their benefit He said the Juvenile courts wew doing good work and he hoped tho coming legislature I would sustain them President John Henry Smith said the apostles of the church had never counseled the Latterday Saints to steal to lie to bear false witness against their neighbors They had always al-ways exhorted the people to pay thtir debts and to live the upright life Ho urged the extreme necessity of virtue vir-tue among young men as well as among the maidens of ZIon At the afternoon session the speakers speak-ers were Seymour B Young Rulon SWells S-Wells Joseph W McMurrln and Charles H Hart Elder Hart talked upon the doctrines of the church and declared that the Book of Mormon was of divine origin Elder McMurrln dwelt at some length upon education asa part of the work of the Mormon cnurcn aeyraour u o Young declared that he was absolutely absolute-ly certain that Joseph F Smith had never broken a pledge or a promise and that he believed in the president without qualification Elder Young said he had bean In the stakes of Sl John and St Joseph in Arizona and reported that all was flourishing in that wonderful country Ilulon SWells S-Wells truth At the Friday sessions of the confer once tho features wore the denunciation denuncia-tion of the unfair tnotlca used by enemies en-emies of tho Mormon church a warning warn-ing against the voicing of accusations against the general authorities by members of tho church counsel to live clean and upright lives tho prophesy that tho Mormons would yet sweep over tho nation eastward in victory and a general invitation to Gentiles to come to ZIon to rccclvo tho faith Following the system adopted at tho opening of the conference the first presidency continued the roll of members mem-bers of the first seven presidents of seventies Friday finished them and called upon five of the apostles during the days session During tho morning session J Golden Gol-den Kimball and Brigham II Roberts both of the seventies made interesting interest-ing addresses especially Elder Roberts Rob-erts who traced the history of tho church and spoke for a more careful investigation of the Mormon faith by the outside world rather than a general gen-eral criticism and ridicule without reason rea-son In addition to these two speakers tho conference members heard Apostle Apos-tle Joseph F Smith Jr youngest of the quorum of twelve and Apostlo Anthony W lyons in tho morning session ses-sion During the afternoon addresses were made by Apostles David O Mc Kay Orson F Whitney and George P j Richards It had been expected that some of the public questions would be taken up by the conference at the session which closed Sunday but there was nothing in this regardonly matters deeply concerning the church being considered It Is estimated that 25000 people on Sunday listened to addresses in the tabernacle assembly hall and in front of the bureau of information building In the temple grounds and sustained all of th gcntial authorities of tho church by unanimous vote In sustaining the general officers of of tho organization the < church members tion who had come from ninny states made no change In tho personnel as it existed at the last conference with the exception of Mrs Emmeline B Wells who succeeded Mrs Batnshcba Wilson Smith as president of tho Relief Re-lief afternoon session opened with the invocation by President F S Bramwell of Union stake followed by two anthems after which Apostlo He ber J Grant Patriarch John Smith and President Francis M Lyman of the twelve made addresses and the Conference closed with an address by President Joseph F Smith and a benediction by David H Cannon of St George In making the closing remarks of the conference of 1910
