Show SEIZE RARE OLD PICTURES Customs Officers Descend Upon Vain t able Paintings in Maino Town Bangor United States customs authorities au-thorities at Vanceboro made one of the most important seizures in years on December 30 and the matter has been kept dark until now The articles ar-ticles seized wore four rare old paintings paint-ings with an appraised value of 2 100 Tho first known In Bangor concerning con-cerning the pictures was an advertisement advertise-ment preliminary to the sale of tho paintings by the United States marshal mar-shal which appeared in a Bangor morning paper Two of the pictures are about four foet square each and represent allegories alle-gories They are valued by tho local customs authorities at 250 each Tho third Is a beautifully done landscapo with a cathedral for the principal feature This is appraised at 000 The fourth is a very old portrait of a gentleman in velvet and neck ruff and Is appraised at 1000 The paintings undoubtedly came from Paris to St John They wero sent from thorn to MacAdam and from thence brought across the line by team to Lambert Lake where they were found and seized by tho customs officers The pictures are now In custody of United States Marshal Mar-shal Mayo and will be sold by auction Il on April 27E |
