Washington. The Supreme court of the United States has denied the petition of former United State Senator Burton of Kansas for a rehearing in th case in which he is under sentence of Imprisonment and fine under the charge of accepting an attorneys fee in a case In which the government was Interested while he was serving as senator. The effect of the decision will he the Immediate Imprisonment of Burton unless his attorneys devise some other means of postponing the execution of the sentence. There was no formal announcement of the decision In the Burton case In open court, the chief Justice merely handing a brief memorandum to the clerk of the court Just before convening. The case of Burton has been before the court since 1903, when he was Indicted In St. Louis on the charge of accepting a fee for representing the Rialto Grain company of that city In an effort to debar it from the use of He was the United States mails. found guilty and sentenced to serve six months In Jail and pay a fine of On appeal to the supreme (2,500. court the decision was reversed on a technicality and a second trial was ordered. Governor Taft Issues Plain Statement to Cuban Insurgent. Havana. The United States, through its peace commissioners. Is not ready to announce when It will withdraw from the island of Cuba and surrender the reins of government to Cuba, but this action cannot be taken until fair elections are assured. This statement was made by Governor Taft on Friday as a sort of valedictory address to the revolutionists committee, with which the American commissioners dealt In Inducing the rebels to cease hostilities and negotiate peace. The committee had a conference lasting an hour with Governor Taft, Assistant Secretary of State Bacon and Charles E. Magoon, who Is to succeed Mr. Taft as provisional governor, and at its conclusion expressed satisfaction with the position taken by the provisional government . DEATH IN STRANGE MANNER. Mrs. Waukomlss, Philip Sprouz Is dead from a broken neck, and her baby daughter Is so badly Injured that it may not recover, as the result of her Mumbling over her husband as be was kneeling In prayer at their home here Friday night Mr. and Mrs. Sproux had spent the friends. Horrible Fate of Hundreds of Helpless Mongolians on ' Steamer Hankow Vessel Destroked at Hong Kong Wharf, Men, Women and Children Being Burned to Death or Drowned European Passengers are Saved. , Hong Kong, China. The British steamer Hankow from Canton was burned Sunday morning while lying alongside her wbarf. Hundreds of Chinese passengers were burned to death and a valuable cargo was destroyed. All the European passengers and crew were saved. The steamer Hankow, with 2,000 Chinese passengers, men, women and children, and seven Europeans, and a cargo Including 300 bales of matting, 5G0 bales of raw silk and 400 bales waste silk, arrived from Canton at three oclock Sunday morning and was shortly afterward moored at the wharf. Her chief officer reported to Captain Branch that the ship was afire. The captain then directed the chief for elgner to turn on the water through the fire hose. This was impossible for the reason that within five minutes after the alarm was given the Hankow was ablaze the fore and aft Captain Branfch then awakened the European passengers, who rushed down the gang way, the ladles In thelf night clothes. The crew was compelled to leave the ship, which by this time waa a veritable furnace. The Chinese steerage passengers were thrown Into a frightful panic. Barney Parsons, farmer, his wife and three children, aged 11, 4 and 1 year, were murdered Friday near Licking, Mo. A farmer named Joda Hamilton, aged 20, has been arrested, charged with the mur derfl and la said to have confessed The body of Parsons was found shot to death, and the mother and three children had been clubbed to death. Parsona had sold hla farm cropa to Hamilton, and It Is alleged that the men quarreled over the terms of the sale. Parsons and family set out from their former home In a covered wagon, bound for northern Missouri.
