Missouri Supreme Court Will Not Interfere to Save Neck of Woman Jefferson City, Mo. The Missouri supreme court has denied Mrs. Aggie fcfyers a writ of error to the supreme court of tho United States. Her attorneys may now apply to one of the judges of the United States supreme court for such a writ to appeal the case to that court for review, October 26 is the date aet for Mrs. Myers to be hanged at Liberty, Mo., for the murder of her husband. , The first intimation that the state supreme court had refused her attor neys a writ of error to carry her case to the United States supreme court was carried to Mrs. Aggie Myers in her cell at Liberty, Mo., by a reporter. Mrs. Myers was lying on a lounge In her cell, having just finished her noonday meal, when the reporter entered. She arose Quickly and listened quietly as he told her of the action of the court Absolutely no show of emotion was displayed by the prisoner, whose remarkable fortitude has been the wonder of all the Jail officials who have had charge of her. 'f am not very much surprised," said Mrs. Myers when the reporter had finished. The three Judges in the criminal branch of the state supreme court are prejudiced against me. I am still confident that my attorney will be successful in gaining a bearing before the United States supreme court and that I shall finally be granted a new trial, and be acquitted. 1 have alwaya been confident, as you know, that I will get a fair hearing and that confidence Is still unshaken. WILL BE BUILT BY CONTRACT. Coolies Will Do tho Hard Labor on the Panama Canal. Washington.- -It has been finally decided that the Panama canal will be completed by contract. In a few days the commission will make public a statement setting forth its reasons for favoring the contract system, and at that time a form of contract will also probably be published showing exactthe sort of document believed by ly Utah the commissioners to be necessary for safeguarding the work. - President Roosevelt is known to support the commission In Its position that the work can be done more satisfactorily by contractors than by the government This change In building the canal will In no way affect the employment of Chinese labor. Proposals for furnishing the Chinese labor were made under such conditions that they can be transferred to contractors and tbe terms can be fulfilled In such a manner that the government can give the coolies just as much protection as it could If the government were the direct employer. A thrilling and blooey enoounter with a bear occurred in the "Zoo of Riverside park Sunday morn-lug- , Charles Hanson being terribly bitten by the beast Hanson was employed to look after the animals. He wept into a cage containing a large tShnamon, weighing some 500 pounds, and a smaller animal, to put in fresh straw. The big bear made a pass at him and he attempted to l ack out but tripped in the straw and fell Into the little enclosure outside. The clnnw mon rushed on him and seised him by the arm. Mrs. Hanson was in the amall enclosure with her children. She sought to fight the bear, but her husband called out, "Fod Gods sake, get out of here. The bear has me, but you can save yourselves!" Mrs. Hanson thereupon threw the children out, and, securing & club, attacked the bear. The bear paid no attention. Men gathered on the outside, but did not venture in. Tbe bear, after chewing the arm nearly off, made a swipe that laid tbe scalp open and then grabbed at the mans throat At that instant a man outside thrust a stick across Hansons throat In such a way that It protected it against the teeth. By this time a man named Sewell came running up with a rifle. He was urged not to shoot as he might kill the man. Hanson called out: Shoot! I am dead if you don't" Sewell then killed tbe bear with a shot through the heart The muscle was torn off Hansons arm and hung at the elbow. It is thought the arm can be saved. , at TORN Charles Hansons Terrible Encounter With An Enraged Cinnamon at the Boise Zoo Brave Wife to the Rescue. - Entered Feb. 21. 1902, as leoond-clte- e matter, Poet onto Spanlab Fork, Utah.
