Show STATUE NEGLECTED 7 EARS I yr Kentucky Legislature Orders Repairs for Henry Clay Monument Lexington IyBy a stroke of lightning seven years ago tho Henry Clay monument In the Lexington cemetery cem-etery was beheaded A short time ago a committee was appointed by Gov Wlllson to take charge of the work of repairing the damage Tho 10 000 appropriated by tho last legislature legisla-ture will be used for the purpose For all this time tho once handsome hand-some statue has stood headless and thousands of people have said with a I sigh What a shame I The monument was erected by subscriptions sub-scriptions from throughout the country coun-try tho eastern people giving tho largest contributions the total cost being 5026384 1t was completed in January 1869 The pedestal Is 69 feet high and tho statue surmounting It Is 124k feet high making the total height from the gound 132 feet It was on the nUht of July 23 1901 when lightning cut the head clean from tho shoulders and allowed It to fall to tho ground where it was burled some three feet m the earth The weight of tho fltatie Itself was 13000 pounds The nOSh and one ear were broken alt Numerous attempts were made to have the state legislature make an appropriation ap-propriation for tho repair of the monument monu-ment but each time the bill was considered con-sidered of little Importance and sidetracked side-tracked there being some feeling that since tho monumeiU was built by pub lie subscription It should bo repaired < n the same Wl1 i u Several attempts were made tc ralso funds In tho latter way but al failed for want of interest The committee appointed by Gov Wlllson will go to work and replace tho statuo as It was originally |
