Show I r fa t 7 f fit MIS o a Mildew on Gooseberries Kor a long time It was Impossible to raise tho largo English varieties of gooseberry In this country on account of the tendency to mildew now tho cause of tho trouble Is bettor understood under-stood and can bo obviated In various ways so that It Is comparatively easy to grow many of tho very largo sorts Some now large varieties have boon produced which are less liable to anlldew than the older ones though most of them will do so more or loss In unfavorable seasons unless great euro If exercised In tho oral place a tho bushes should have plenty of room as a crowded condition Is ono of tho causes of tho trouble They should not be planted In a place where tho wind cannot blow freely among them but in an airy situation where there will bo less tendency to dampness Tho dampness mono Is not so bad as tho effect of tho hot sun on tho bushes after a prolonged wet spell Judicious pruning has much to do with tho prevention of mildew as where the old wood Is removed and tho extra branches taken out the air has a better chance for circulation and less mildew will bo tho result To sum up the matter tho best way to obviate tho difficulty is to plant tho bushes where there Is a good circulation circula-tion of air In partial shndo during tho heat of the day and keep the bushes well thinned of branches If tho fruit Is so heavy as to bear tho branches down to tho ground a frame should bo provided to hold them up When mildew appears In spite of all precaution a spray can bo applied that will effectually checlt It as mildew mil-dew yields more readily to tho fungicide fungi-cide than almost any other fungus To make It dissolve onehalf ounce of liver ot sulphur in ono gallon of water and spray mho bushes thoroughly beginning be-ginning when tho disease first begins und repenting If necessary In damp seasons tho work will bo needed moral often Bordeaux mixture has also proved a valuable help In this work four applications appli-cations being necessary during tho season two before blooming and two after If currant worms aro also working add a little paris groen or white hellebore to kill them It will not bo found a hard task to fight mildew as It does not appear every season often being years between be-tween In our experience of many years wo have had It but oncoinnd xeea think our freedom from It duo to tho care In planting and pruning |
