carried r the mountain range through a ulent pass and arrangements I made for locks In which by fill licm with wntfir vessels passing nn 0 h i will be lifted to the necessary n It was a simple matter only eight locks In all being a tfrei If It bo understood that theft the-ft of the great ditch presents in Addle part a high summit from hub It slopes gradually toward the ucn either side with four locks on ki h slope the Idea will be perfectly 11SOli boa the canal Is already practlc r f finished and navigable for nearly ti I been miles from tho Atlantic end > Ifor five and a half miles from the die end Thus ono may start in a at from Colon on the east side of to i Isthmus and travel comfortably I water for more than a dozen miles next fifteen miles are partly dug the skill of the engineers est hottOlu love tho high of the canal will be only 68 feet above the ocean For a considerable the part of Its length canal runs the Chagres through the valley of rivera stream which though small in thq dry Ject season Is SUb to sudden and tremendous eta fresh Heuce means must he provided to and It from Clluslng destruction anll a great darn accord will be built accord Ingl at Dolilo for storing the flood waters This dam will ionn the crcs Into a vast lake tho boun diaries ot which have been accurately established and which will extend thlr teen miles to ObIspo where the canal leaves the river > covering n an area ° f more than twcntyono square miles The capacity of ihe dam will be some thing like 200000000 cubic yards A Mammoth Reservoir I Another dam will be built at Alha Jupln on tho upper Chagres nine miles from the canal of concrete masonry forming a reservoir with a surface area of ten square miles and a capacity ca-pacity of 130000000 cubic yards It will not only help to store the floodwaters flood-waters of the Chagres In the wet season sea-son but will do some very useful work Acting as a feeder to the sum Milt level of tho canal it will supply the great ditch with water In the dry season through the medium of an aqueduct and will furnish hydraulic power for operating the huge locks The locks will he worked by electricity elec-tricity obtained from this water power and by the same means the canal will be Illuminated throughout Its entire length with electric lights In this way the Chagres will be transformed from an element of danger dan-ger Into a useful friend and helper No trouble is feared from volcanocr Inasmuch as there are none within 200 miles The harbors at Colon and Panama are excellent and need no further fur-ther excavation or protection though basins will be built at each end of the canal for the convenient Ingress and egress of ships Each of these basins will be ICO yards wide and 1 000 yards long and will be provided with mooring facilities and wharves connected with tho termInal stations of the Panama railroad The railroad runs alongside of the big ditch clear across the Isthmus greatly facilitating the work For much of its length the banks of the canal will be faced with masonry The canal when finished will accommodate ac-commodate merchantmen and war vessels of the largest size and the time of transit from ocean to ocean will he less than a day The benefits it will bring to the commerce of the world will be of course incalculable 1 P r z r tit 1 9 w F ran v Il + + kIn t fn Old Quarter of Panama with some deep
