Show FIFTY YEARS IN HARNESS Railroader Has Good Right to Be Proud of His Record Kalltoml man for over 50 years dur lug which time he has never cost the amjimnlPB for which he worked ono single penny that Is the proud record made by Joseph M Alexander now employed by the Boston Albany at the South station yards In Boston Ho was born in Brlmflold August i 18u4 On May IS 1S5S ho secured his first railroad situation at tho old No 1 freight house Boston Worcester line where he worked as a brakeman Two years later he became a fireman During his spare time Mr Alexander studied his engine In 1SG4 ho shifted to the right shlo of the cab and has handled the throt tie ever since One of his first locomotive f was the old Niagara a passenger yard shifter Mr Alexander who was christened Buffalo Joo by members of the old Quincy school had tho honor of hav ing an engine named after him in 1SC1 Under one of tho cab windows was a picture of a large buffalo knee deep In grass Under the other window win-dow was tho name Buffalo Joe Later he was given the Lion and tho Farmlngton The latter was built In tho Bury works at Liverpool England and was only 12 tons in weight She was used for 32 years on the Boston Worcester road and made over 700000 miles In that time During his half century of railroad work ho has never been reprimanded or laid off Although nearly 75 years of age ho Is rated as one of the best engineers on the road His eyesight Is exceptionally excep-tionally good and ho Is able to read signals with ease |
