Show DAY OF LARGE FEES Eminent Lawyers and Surgeons Receive Re-ceive Magnificent Sums This Is an age of great fees In law In surgery in science and oven In diplomacy Theso fees are not always paid by corporations or Indian tribes says the Baltimore Sun A few years ago it was widely published at the time a gentleman who was among tho leaders of tho New York bar receIved re-ceIved a fee of 100000 for a legal opinion which ho was able to give almost al-most offhand A question involving the status of a great enterprise was submitted to him In the form of a I memorandum Ho wrote his opinion In one word and It was sustained in tho courts This seems to bo an absurdly ab-surdly large sum to pay for one word of legal advIce In another aspect however It was not excessive for It enabled this company to establish itself It-self In an Impregnable position In tho legal point of view and to continue Its operations with the assurance that It I could not bo attacked successfully At the close of the war between China and Japan eleven years ago the Chi neso government needed the services of an able and experienced diplomatist to cope with the capable and upto date Japanese diplomats It therefore engaged Mr John W Foster a former secretary of state of tho United States to assist In the preparation of the treaty of peace It Is understood that the fee which Mr Foster received from China was 150000 a largo sum to bo sure but not out of proportion to the services ho rendered China was at tho mercy of Japan which was able to enforce Its demands both as regards territory and Indemnity By persuading the Japanese to modify their demands Mr Foster was In a position po-sition to save China territory and treasure It was a business matter throughout and the Chinese government govern-ment seems to have been thoroughly satisfied with the work of its American Ameri-can agent |
