the seventyninth Bomlan inial conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints a resolution was offered by Apostle He her J Grant and unanimously approved ap-proved pledging ItH officers and members mem-bers to uso emery proper means to further fur-ther the cause of temperance to secure se-cure time passage of such laws as may bo necessary to close saloons and otherwise oth-erwise decrease till Bale of liquor and also pledged themselves to the support of n Sunday law Tho resolution was as follows Believing In the word and teachings of President Joseph F Smith as set forth this morning on the subject of temperance It In proposed that all the officers and members of the Church of Latterday Saints will do ull in their power that can properly bo done with lawmakers generally to havo such laws enacted by our legislature soon to be elected as may be necessary to close saloons and othonvlsp decrease the sale of liquor and to enact till Sunday law Despite thc Inclement weather the attendance WHS large overflow meetIngs meet-Ings being necessary to accommodate tho large crowds Nearly all the speakers of both sessions of the opening open-ing day of the conference dealt with the subject of temperance as based on tho revelation of the Word of Wisdom Wis-dom which prohibits the use of Intoxicating In-toxicating liquors tea coffee and tobacco to-bacco and which recommends the sparing use of meats After but a brief mention of till I prosperity which had been granted tho church since the last conference President Joseph F Smith dovoted his address to the advocating of temperance tem-perance ns based upon the Word of Wisdom and to urging the Latterday Saints to so live ns to set an example to other peoples In this regard and to make tltelr name known over the whole world as advocates of temperance temper-ance Ho also severely censured the uso of tobacco In any form President Smiths counselors John II Winder and Anthon II Lund who also spoke at tho morning session sustained the position taken on temperance tem-perance by President Smith and pledged him their hearty uupport In 1 i the stand which he hud taken I I 1 I Tho subject was taken up Immediately Imme-diately on tho opening of the afternoon I after-noon session by Apostlo F M Lyman I who did not confine himself to speaking speak-ing against Intoxicating liquors hut I who attacked the habit of using tea pnd coffeo and the excessive use of I meats Mr Lyman treated the matter mat-ter from a financial point of view and showed tho enormous saving which would accrue from time discontinuance discon-tinuance of the use of Intoxicants tea coffee tobacco and meats Apostle Heber J Grant also made a spirited plea against tho saloons I and drew a terrifying picture of the results of Intemperance After ho had announced that the checking of the liquor traffic I was In the hands the people whom ho addressed lit ged on them that they use overy effort in the family circle and throughout the state to bring the traffic Into disrepute dis-repute and by their votes at the coming com-ing election to stamp out the saloon evil which ho stated Is corrupting tho youth of tho community He then presented the resolution which ro celved the sanction of the entire conference con-ference Tho overflow meeting at the mornIng morn-Ing session was under the direction of Apostle Anthony IvIns and was addressed ad-dressed by Joseph E Robinson G M Ellsworth C H Callis and Andrew Jensen In the aftornoon It was necessary nec-essary to hold overflow meetings in both the assembly hall and in Barratl hall Thts meeting at the assembly hall was In charge of Bishop lyerson Ben E Rich Saneiel O Bennlon and H J Cannon There wero fully 2000 In attendance At Barratt hall the meeting was In charge of Joseph A McCrea Nephl Pratt Joseph Keeler and Thomas B Evans There were about 1500 present It Is estimated that there wore fuHy 16000 people hero for the conference At the ovenlng session ludgo H H Rolapp ot Ogdcn also urged that the people of tho church talk with their votes as well as with their voices against tho saloons I In tho course of his address at the opening session against the church have had 1 T but tho ir ctf bringing the thurch I prominently before the world Wo i want the whole world to understand I the doctrine origin 1Ind purpose of tho work of too church and this can cnly bo brought about by bringing tho vorld Into contact with our work This Is being accomplished through tho attacks upon the church Wo want tho jnst and understanding world to know nUll understand our doctrine an our works There are who will not none so blind aa those see none so deaf as those who will not hear and none so heartless as those who Hoeng the light and tho truth close their hearts against it In speaking of temperance ho said There Is a great movement on foot throughout 1 the land A wave of temperance tem-perance Is sweeping over the country gaining In power every day I am In favor of this movement and Indorse It with all my heart He then made a forceful and eloquent argument In favor of temperance and declared that tho Latterday Saints being the covenant people of God should set nn example to Other peoples and thould be upright and honest living Mire lives and loving and fearing Cod Second Days Session Salt LaVo CltyTho second days session of the semiannual conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat terday Saints was devoted largely to the subject of temperance as expounded I ex-pounded In tho Word of Wisdom Tho tpeakers of the day were the apostles or the church All of thd speakers I I placed themselves on record ns fa horlng I the cause of temperance and the observance of tho Word of Wisdom Wis-dom John Henry Smith made a special trip from tho Irrigation congress at l Mbuquorqiio to address tho conference confer-ence Ho took as they keynote of his I jpooch the need for the Latterday I Saints to Improve the condition of I tho land by good citizenship and obedience to the commands of God I as expressed In tho Word of Wisdom lludpnr Clawson confined his re tenths almost entirely to the Import rnco of temple work among the church members and urged that the members of the church perform the ordinances in the temple for the dp and for the Ivllng who had not received re-ceived the covenants of the church Apostle Heed Smoot dwelt on the recosslty and efficacy of prayer especially es-pecially as applied to the observance of the Word of Wisdom Ho stated that he personally was strongly nwaro of the efficacy of prayer and that on account of tho prayers and leachingH t of his mother It had been an easy matter for him to observe tIN Word of Wisdom which he had always attempted to keep strictly Ho stated that prnvor was people would Improve In their keeping of the law Apostle George Albert Smith spoke In almost the same strain Apostle George F Hiclnrds dwelt upon the fact that the Word of Wisdom was most applicable First Counselor Coun-selor John H Winder urged upon his congregation more strict observance of their duty as tithe payers Do not I pay your tithing for the rewards which have been promised he said and
