Show r I OBITUARY J I Mrs Maria Hales Laid to Rest On July 24 the funeral services were held in the City Pavilion over the remains re-mains of sister Maria Hales the widow of the late George 0 Union The speakers platform was draped in white muslin and decorated with bcnut ful potted flowers The vast congregation congre-gation was called to order at 430 p m hy Niels Anthon presiding The choir lead by Ed M 1 Howe with Mrs David Prior at the piano sang Come Come ye Saints no Toil or Labor Fear The invocation was by Bishop Marinus Larsen The choir sting The Resurrection Resur-rection Day The first speaker was John F Beck he had known Sitter hales since the days of Palmyra when she was a little girl and he a small boy She was a good and true Later Hnint she was u good wife and mother There were hree or four sets of children child-ren at her home which she had to manage and she had never driven any of them away from home W A Jones was the next speaker he said the greatest blessing that can bu conferred on any woman was to become I come a mother of Israel Sister Hales has been a true mother to those children It is Gods will that we should die We know as LaterDay Saints that there is a resurrection of the dead There are many who believe that death ends all He was thankful to his heavenly Father for the knowledge of the gospel and the hope of the rl resurrection of the dead our spirits are immortal and they will take the bodies again and these bodies will also become immortal Sister Hales is not dead God is i merciful to his children Only those e who remain faithful to the gospel of Christ will have part in the first recur rection I The next speaker was Elder John Moore who read a short biographical I sketch of the deceased He hadjutown I Sister Hales since 1856 and knew no I evil of her He tnanked Jod for the knowledge I know-ledge of the gospel like brotherJones he is assured of u resurrection oftin 1 just Wtehuve received the gospel to prepare ua for an exaltation in the lite I to come These buries will be restored Men who hud been raised from the I dead laid their hand on the head of I j the Prophet Joseph Smith and conferred J confer-red the holy priesthood upon him of the I i Son of God Vo open the dispensation of I f I the fullness of times Those who have not kept the faith will be ashamed and will never enter ihto the presenc of Gods world without end I Niels Anthon was the last speaker He said he would like to have the people peo-ple read the 20th chapter of Johns Kovcl ation In days that are past people I did not believe in the resurrection of I the dead they could not comprehend it The LatterDay Saints have a knowled cf the resurrection and that I is what makes a peculiar people What is death It is only passing into eternal lifeThe The choir sang in closing Farewell all Earthly Honors Benediction by August Swensen I The pall bearers were Bishop George Hales Hial B Hales Win P Hales I Lawrence Hales David E Hales and I D D Nisonger The floral tributes were many and beautiful I Sister Maria Hales was born in Mul I verton Mass December 12 1842 She came to Utah in 1832 and to Spanish I Fork the same year She is a mother I of live sons and four daughters she j I has thirtythree grandchildren sho I was a kind mother and a loving wife a peaceful neighbor and a woman who did all the good that she gould and aa little harm as possible |
