Show BRYAN VOICES HIS I GRATITUDE Declares That He Still Believes in the Ultimate Triumph of Democratic Demo-cratic Principles Has Faith That the Principles Ho Fought for Will Yet Be Accepted by the Majority of the People of the United States Lincoln Neb William Jennings Bryan on Thursday November 6 id sued tho following statement Tho election has gono against us by a decisive majority The returns aro not all in and it Is Impossible to say what causes contributed most to ho Republican victory Wo mado our fight upon a platform which embodies em-bodies what we bellovo to bo good for tho American people but It Is for tho people themselves to decide what Jaws they desire and what methods of government they prefer I have faith that the publicity which wo asked for will yet commend Itself to the American Ameri-can people that the election of senators sen-ators by the people will be secured that the Inquitles or tno trusts will arouse an opposition that will result In the elimination of tho principle of private monopoly I am confident that the people will see tho necessity for the labor legislation and tho tariff reduction which our platform demanded I am confident too that the educational work done In this campaign will result In securing greater protection to bank depositors Tho above are tho most prominent reforms for which we labored and I believe that these reforms will yet como together with more effective regulation of railroads and Independence Inde-pendence for tho Philippines I desire to commend tho work of our national committee I am entirely en-tirely satisfied with Mr Mack as tho chairman and with the members of the committee I do not see what they could have done more than they did and as for myself I put forth every effort in my power to securo victory for our cause Tho nomination nomina-tion came from tho hands of the voters I have obeyed their command com-mand and have led as best I could Words will not express my gratitude for tho devotion which has been shown by millions of Democrats during dur-ing the past twelve years Neither am I able to adequately express my appreciation for tho kind words I which have been spoken since tho election If I could regard tho defeat as purely a personal one I would consider con-sider It a blessing rather than a misfortune mis-fortune for I am relieved of the burdens bur-dens and responsibilities of an office that 1s attractive only in proportion as It gives an opportunity to render a larger public service But I shall serve as willingly In a private capacity capac-ity as In a public one God do > snot s-not require great things of us He only requires that we Improve the opportunities for service presented by private life In this hour of national defeat I find some consolation In tho cordial support given by my neighbors by tho citizens of Lincoln and by the people of the state of Nebraska With n Democratic legislature we shall bo able to put Into practice so much of the Democratic platform as relates to state legislation and I trust that our state will set an example that will bean be-an influence for good in tho nation |
