Df Jesus Christ of Lntterday Saints opened at the Tabernacle on Sunday morning October 3 at least 20000 people being in attendance at the opening session it being necessary to nod overflow meetings In the Assembly Assem-bly hall and on the grounds in order to accommodate the largo crowd At the morning session President Joseph F Smith delivered his annual address tho keynote of which was an appeal for the careful training and Instruction of the young He asked that the greatest efforts be put forth to Instruct the Mormon young people In the principles of their religion in order that they might remain In the faith The president went on record as being opposed to marriage between be-tween members of the Mormon church and nonMormons Such marriages 4 mar-riages ho said were almost sure to I result unhappily President Smith in his speechf made a plea for the support of home t Industry This plea coming from the leading spiritual advisor of by far the greater portion of the people of the state will undoubtedly dtj much to assist In the development < < ol Utah industries I The president paid a high tribute to the honest toiler He deplored tho fact that In the training of the youth the instruction in the trades wa I aeglected for the education looUlno toward occupations considered by I softie td be more genteel than that t of the tradesman The training ot the youth In useful trades and the development t J devel-opment of home Industries to give employment to the young people he said went hand in nand toward the l progress of the community J President John R Winder flre l organizations I and particularly the work of the 1 young missionaries in every field f f Apostle John Henry Smith spoke I chiefly on the development of the resources j re-sources in the territory occupied by 11 the Latterday Saints He urged lu tense and careful cultivation the reclaiming re-claiming of the lands and tho development i devel-opment of the soil Ho spoke of home industries as necessary to the doved i opment of the country and necessary in order to keep the youth of the Mormon people from the sin of Idleness Idle-ness Tho children ho declared BUould be well guarded and one of the best safeguards ho sold was honest employment Apostlo Heber J Grant talked at some length on tho advantages ol homo Industry He praised Presidents Presi-dents Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff Elder Melvin J Ballard t president of the Northwestern States t mission a report of improvements in church work In Arizona by President Andrew KImball of St Joseph stake and a report of work of the California Califor-nia mission by President Joseph El Robinson Music was furnished by a choir under the leadership of C J Thomas Rudger Clawson Reed Smoot Hy rum M Smith George Albert Smith George F
